1–7 July 2024, Tartu, Estonia
FOSS4G Europe 2024

The Free and Open Source for Geospatial Europe (FOSS4GE) conference is the European branch event of the Open Source Geospatial Foundation’s (OSGeo (https://www.osgeo.org/)) annual conference. In 2024, the conference series will be coming to Tartu, Estonia, and will take place from 1. July to 7. July. With a week consisting of 2 days of workshops, 3 days of oral presentations, 2 days involving a community sprint, social events, a business-to-business (B2B) meeting, networking, and late-night discussions, it will be a thrilling place to be.

FOSS4G conferences are, in fact, about software, but they also serve a greater purpose. They are forums intended to bring together software developers, users, and advocates of FOSS4G technology to present and discuss a wide array of topics ranging from state-of-the-art software to specific use cases, from building and sustaining a community to building a business around FOSS4G technology, and from the technical details of software to democratic processes and policy making.

FOSS4G conferences have been the go-to place to be immersed in the open source geo-community, where you can keep up to date on the latest developments, find the latest new super library, or learn about new innovative products and services. It is the place to meet the people who wrote the books you read in university and whose blogs and social media accounts you follow.

The international conference series started in 2004 under the name FOSS/GRASS User Conference but rebranded to FOSS4G as of 2006. The conference's European regional branch dates back to 2012 when the first FOSS4G Central and Eastern Europe (FOSS4G-CEE) was held in Prague, Czechia. Set to take place whenever the international conference is not held in Europe, the European conferences have been hosted in Bucharest, Romania (2013); Bremen, Germany (2014); Como, Italy (2015); Paris, France(2017); and Guimarães, Portugal (2018).

In co-operation with the Estonian Geoinformatics Society (https://estgis.ee/en/) and the Landscape Geoinformatics Lab (https://landscape-geoinformatics.ut.ee/) of the University of Tartu (https://ut.ee/en), the local organizing committee is very excited to invite you to Tartu, Estonia, in the first week of July 2024. This is the time of year with the shortest nights and (hopefully) the best weather of the year!

The year 2024 is also marked by Tartu becoming one of the European Capitals of Culture (Tartu2024 (https://tartu2024.ee/en/)). We hope that this will offer all conference attendees a wider range of extracurricular activities.
