Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

It is now well known that the main role played by extracellular vesicles (EVs) in nearly all kingdoms of life is their involvement in intercellular communication, even between different organisms. EVs are membrane-delimited nanoparticles that are released by cells to transfer, in encapsulated and protected form, signaling molecules including proteins, nucleic acids, lipids and other metabolites to neighbor or distant recipient cells. Their specific molecular cargo directly affects the fate and functional role of EVs. Various studies have been focused on nucleic acid content, as one of the first discovery in the EV field was their ability of horizontal genetic transfer. However, growing evidence has highlighted the importance of other classes of biomolecules, i.e., proteins, lipids and metabolites. These molecules not only have structural roles, but they can be specific effectors of endo- and exocytic trafficking of EVs, as well as of cross-talking between origin and target cells. Moreover, the EV molecular cargoes mirror the physiological and pathological conditions and the type of releasing cells and directly affect the targeting and functional effects of EVs on recipient cells.

The purpose of this Special Issue is to provide insights focused on protein, lipid and metabolite profiles of EVs isolated from different sources and/or under different physiological and pathological conditions. Original research, methods papers and comprehensive reviews on these topics are welcome.
