Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Precision and ultra-precision grinding are frequently applied to machine a wide range of hard and brittle materials with closed surface tolerance and remarkable surface quality. However, grinding is a complex process which is influenced by many factors, such as the workpiece material properties, wheel characteristics, abrasive properties, and grinding conditions, which makes the modeling process or deterministic analysis of the grinding mechanism extremely complex. In recent decades, the demand for high-precision parts with complex surfaces has strongly increased. The high-precision components play an essential role in the optical, automotive, and communication industries as well as in medical and life sciences. However, it is a challenge to fabricate the surface whilst ensuring a high quality and low level of damage. Therefore, it is essential to study the surface generation mechanism and subsurface damage control in the machining of high-performance optic elements. It is essential to strengthen the understanding and description of the damage evolution and removal mechanisms as well as the surface generation involved in grinding and process optimization, which is of great significance for the high-precision and low-damage machining of high-performance ductile and brittle material components. Accordingly, this Special Issue aims to summarize recent research on advanced grinding process technology, the precise grinding process and micro-grinding process, characterization to reveal the damage behaviors and material removal mechanisms involved in grinding processes, the theoretical model involved in grinding processes, optimizing machining process parameters in precision/ultra-grinding ductile and brittle materials, and the design of grinding wheels or abrasive tools.
