Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

In recent years, the performance of solar cells on the basis of a variety of new thin film technologies has improved significantly, making them promising candidates for commerzialization. This will result in innovative flexible, light weight and ultrathin photovoltaic components on the energy market. Due to a delicate balance between efficient charge carrier generation and extraction, these solar cells typically benefit strongly from nanostructured interfaces that can assist in improving either the light absorption or the charge carrier extraction properties of the respective cells. In this special issue, the focus is placed on development of such Nanostructured Thin Film Solar Cells,  and thus on how nanostructuring of electrodes, interlayers or active layers can assist in improving the power conversion efficiencies. Both new nanostructure integration schemes as well as new types of nanostructured interfaces developed for this purpose will be discussed. This includes novel device development and modelling efforts as well as work related to upscaling of nanostructured thin film solar cells. Contributions from all different types of thin film solar cell technologies willl be covered, such as, for example, organic, perovskite, CZTS and thin film Silicon cells, hence providing a comprehensive  overview of activities in this area.

All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. Micromachines is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
