Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The discipline of photonics and optoelectronics has experienced significant advancements due to the growing interest in two-dimensional (2D) materials, mostly driven by the discovery of graphene. This notable increase in research has expanded the possibilities and potential in these areas. Graphene possesses distinctive optoelectronic characteristics, including notable electrical conductivity, remarkable optical transparency, and rapid carrier dynamics, rendering it an amazing material suitable for a wide range of applications. The primary objective of this Special Issue is to comprehensively document the latest advancements, novel methodologies, and paradigm-shifting revelations about photonics and optoelectronics in the context of graphene-based technology.

This Special Issue opens a call for papers that delve into the captivating realm of Graphene-Based Photonic and Optoelectronic Applications. Submissions of original research, thorough reviews, and thought-provoking perspectives are encouraged. Contributions may cover a wide array of themes, including but not limited to the following:

  1. The Fundamental Properties of Graphene for Photonics and Optoelectronics: A Comprehensive Analysis: This study aims to investigate the electrical and optical properties of graphene that are pertinent to its potential uses in photonics. The focus of this study is on the development of theoretical models and simulation methodologies specifically designed for optoelectronic devices based on graphene.
  2. Developments in Graphene-Infused Photodetection and Solar Technology: Enhancements in the sensitivity and rapidity of photodetectors employing graphene. The incorporation of graphene into solar cell designs for improved performance and adaptability.
  3. Graphene Integration in Photonic Integrated Circuits: Approaches for Integrating Graphene with Photonic Components: The present study focuses on the examination of challenges encountered during the fabrication process of photonic integrated circuits (PICs) based on graphene, as well as the corresponding solutions.
  4. Graphene-Enhanced Optical Communications: This study aims to explore the application of graphene in modulators and transceivers, enhancing optical communication systems and addressing the limitations of current communication technologies.
  5. Graphene in Light-Emitting Devices: This study aims to investigate the development of graphene-based LEDs and lasers and the innovative use of graphene quantum dots in optoelectronic applications.
  6. Graphene–Polymer Composites for Flexible Optoelectronics: This study aims to examine the fabrication and characterization of graphene–polymer composites and their subsequent application in wearable electronics and flexible displays within the field of flexible optoelectronics.
  7. Nonlinear Optics and Ultrafast Photonics with Graphene: This study aims to delve into graphene's nonlinear optical properties and their potential implications, as well as the use of graphene's exceptional carrier dynamics in ultrafast laser technology.
  8. Graphene-based Terahertz Technologies: The objective of this work is to investigate the utilization of graphene in the context of terahertz generation, detection, and modulation. Additionally, it seeks to evaluate the potential of graphene in improving terahertz imaging and spectroscopic methodologies.
  9. Hybrid Systems: Graphene with Other 2D Materials: The primary objective of this study is to investigate the synergistic outcomes observed in hybrid structures that combine graphene with other two-dimensional materials. The aim is to find and analyze novel phenomena and prospective applications of devices that arise from integrating graphene-based van der Waals heterostructures.
  10. Challenges and Future Directions: This study aims to evaluate the environmental resilience and scalability of optoelectronic devices utilizing graphene as a fundamental material, while also examining the associated problems in their industrialization process. The objective of this study is to assess the market potential and prospects of graphene in the photonics industry.

Academic researchers and other professionals are encouraged to contribute their original research articles, reviews, and communications of the subjects. To ensure the production of valuable and influential contributions to the field, manuscripts must adhere to the specific standards outlined by the journal. Furthermore, these manuscripts will be subjected to a meticulous peer-review procedure, characterized by its rigorous nature.

Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process.
