Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The responsiveness of some materials to certain stimuli allows them to undergo significant changes in its physical state, mechanical properties, aspect ratio, optical transparency, or electric resistivity, among others. The range of stimuli that can interact with the materials is very broad, but they are typically categorized according to its chemical (pH, ions, gases), physical (light, temperature, electric currents) or biological (enzymes, metabolites) nature.

Scaffolds made from this stimuli-responsive materials are expected to have a significant impact on the field of tissue engineering, as they can be used as carriers for the delivery of bioactive molecules or as cell-supporting platforms. Their potential to interact with metabolic cues and become activated from external fields makes them ideal for the design of next-generation biomimics to interact with biological complex systems.

The Special Issue is open to original papers and reviews covering, but not restricted to, the following topics:

  • Substrates for cell sheet engineering;
  • On-demand drug delivery systems;
  • Smart hydrogels;
  • Shear-thickening matrices;
  • Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) for tissue regeneration;
  • Piezoelectric polymeric scaffolds;
  • Biosensors with theranostic potential;
  • Soft microrobots and actuators;
  • Versatile platforms for stem cell differentiation;
  • Synthetic matrices for organoid maturation.
