Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Nowadays, global warming and other environmental problem are increasing and challenging global sustainable development. Greenhouse gases, especially carbon dioxide (CO2), are widely perceived as the main cause of human-induced global warming. Although the global construction industry plays a critical role in economic development boosting, this sector is responsible for nearly 40% of the total carbon emission and 36% of end-use energy worldwide. The growing population and the rising building stock contribute to the continuous increase of energy and carbon emissions in construction. Under such circumstances, reducing carbon emissions from construction and buildings is of great urgency and importance to climate change mitigation.

The construction industry has been making great efforts to reduce carbon emissions for many years. Nevertheless, there is still a long way to go for the building sector to meet international carbon-neutral expectations.  In this way, sustainable low-carbon building management optimisation has become critical given the tremendous number of challenges that low-carbon building endeavors are confronting. Management-related issues are equally important as technologies development for the implementation and application of low-carbon buildings. Given this, various efforts worldwide for optimising low-carbon building management are required.

Thus, this Special Issue aims to publish research-, practice-oriented, and review papers that make practical and theoretical contributions to achieving the goals of low-carbon or zero-carbon buildings through sustainable management. Topics may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Governance, legislation, and policy for low-carbon building;
  • Organizational aspects, actors, management strategies, etc., for low-carbon building;
  • Capabilities for individuals or organizations for achieving low-carbon building;
  • Core digital technologies for achieving low-carbon building;
  • Life cycle assessment and management for low-carbon building;
  • Drivers, constraints, critical success factors, influences, etc., of low-carbon building;
  • Roadmaps for net-zero carbon buildings;
  • Carbon emission calculation method for low-carbon buildings;
  • Innovation processes, tools, and methods for achieving low-carbon building.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Sustainability is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
