Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

This Special Issue explores the intersection of AI, openness, and online education in pursuing UNESCO's Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG4, which envisions quality education for all.

UNESCO's SDG4 highlights the significance of access, equity, diversity, and lifelong learning in shaping the future of education. The cornerstone of this goal lies in fostering an inclusive educational landscape through open access, open educational resources, and learner empowerment. In alignment with this vision, UNESCO's 'Futures of Education: Learning to Become' initiative aims to envision how knowledge and learning can shape the future of humanity and the planet.

The COVID-19 pandemic has demonstrated the urgency of transitioning towards online and distance learning while ensuring equitable access for all learners. This crisis has further accelerated the demand for sustainable educational models prioritizing quality, efficiency, and personalized learning experiences.

The Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) is linked to these developments, revolutionizing various aspects of human existence, including education. However, education systems have been relatively slow to adapt to the transformative potential of the 4IR. Embracing proactive measures, both in practice and research, is essential for educational institutions to thrive in this era of technological innovation.

As we face the challenges posed by the pandemic, investing in innovative solutions that promote high-quality, inclusive education is crucial. This includes addressing social injustice, inequality, and the digital divide exacerbated by the crisis.

We invite researchers, educators, policymakers, and practitioners to contribute original research articles, case studies, and theoretical perspectives exploring sustainable education's multifaceted dimensions in the AI age. Topics of interest include but are not limited to:

  • Innovations in online and distance learning;
  • The transformational power of education technology for a sustainable education;
  • Ethical considerations in AI-driven education;
  • Inclusive pedagogical approaches;
  • Empowering marginalized learners through technology;
  • Strategies for addressing the digital divide in education;
  • Policy implications for sustainable education reform.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Sustainability is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
