Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The sustainable development of tourism is closely related to the level of development of industries integrated with it, including transport and logistics. In general, transport and logistics as an object of research are studied quite well. Nevertheless, it is very important to study the role and importance of transport and logistics for the sustainability of tourism, especially in regions with transition and developing economies. The sustainable development of tourism in promising areas can give impetus to economic development and help improve the well-being of the local population. Planning transport and logistics systems requires preliminary examination, feasibility studies of projects and evaluation. Economically oriented approaches to the development of the transport and logistics system dominate regional tourism development programs, but natural factors and the opinions and traditions of local communities should also be taken into account. The introduction of innovations and resource-saving technologies in the transport and logistics system is also very important for the sustainability of the tourism industry.

The topic of infrastructure development for the purpose of sustainable development is extremely relevant in connection with global challenges, economic, social and environmental factors and international obligations. Research on this topic is important for the development of policies, strategies and projects aimed at creating sustainable and prosperous socio-economic systems. The development of infrastructure in the regions helps to reduce the gap between the standard of living in cities and villages. Developed infrastructure makes regions more attractive for tourists. In the modern world, developed infrastructure is one of the key factors contributing to a country’s competitiveness. The development of transport infrastructure is essential for the development of the tourism sector as it increases accessibility, expands geographical coverage, increases competitiveness, improves the quality of services, promotes sustainable development and stimulates investment.

This Special Issue invites representatives from various fields of science: economists, geographers, ecologists, sociologists, logistics specialists, researchers of the transport network and broadly understood infrastructure, etc. Different views and expert assessment should be united under a common goal: to study the features and evaluate the importance of transport and logistics for the sustainable development of tourism in various regions of the world. This Special Issue will review the literature on the importance of transport and logistics in sustainable tourism development; and identify new ways to ensure tourism sustainability through optimal transport and logistics systems.

Topic 1. “Green” logistics

  • Creation of recreational zones free from motor transport in large agglomerations.
  • Development of “smart” cities: the use of information technologies to optimize logistics processes in cities.
  • Route optimization.
  • Use of alternative energy sources in industrial regions.
  • Use of environmentally friendly modes of transport in large cities.
  • Use of information technology: use of AI, Big Data and blockchain to optimize logistics processes.

Topic 2. Transport as the basis for the development of tourism clusters in the regions

  • Development of transport infrastructure in small and remote tourist regions.
  • Integrated transport systems and their role in sustainable tourism development.
  • New methodological approaches in transport, logistics and tourism research.
  • New trends and processes in the field of changes in transport infrastructure in tourism and their impact on sustainable development.
  • Sustainable transport as a tourist attraction.
