Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

We are delighted to introduce this Special Issue dedicated to exploring the vital intersection of Geographic Information Science (GIS) with transportation and traffic safety, with a particular emphasis on sustainability. GIS and GIS technologies offer a powerful toolkit to analyze and manage geospatial data, providing invaluable insights into transportation systems and enhancing road safety measures. The focus of this Issue is to showcase cutting-edge research and innovative approaches that integrate GIS to address challenges related to traffic management, accident analysis, and the development of sustainable and safer transportation networks, especially for new and emerging mobility applications.

The scope of this Special Issue encompasses a wide array of studies exploring the applications of GIS in transportation and traffic safety. We welcome contributions that examine the integration of real-time traffic data with GIS, predictive modeling of traffic patterns and congestion for sustainable urban planning, and geospatial analysis of road accidents to identify high-risk areas. Additionally, we encourage submissions on the implementation of GIS-based tools for sustainable transportation management, emergency response, and the exploration of how GIS supports the adoption of eco-friendly transportation solutions like electric vehicles and public transit systems.

The purpose of this Special Issue is twofold: first, to present the state-of-the-art research on the role of GIS in improving transportation efficiency, safety, and sustainability; second, to foster interdisciplinary discussions among researchers, practitioners, and policymakers, promoting a comprehensive understanding of how GIS can shape the future of transportation in a sustainable manner. By highlighting GIS-based innovations in traffic safety and sustainable mobility, we aim to inspire transformative solutions that can lead to more eco-conscious transportation planning and contribute to the overarching goal of building greener and safer transportation infrastructures worldwide.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Sustainability is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
