Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Sustainable Building and Energy Management in Smart City

(1) Introduction, including scientific background and highlighting the importance of this research area.

The energy efficiency of buildings and CO2 emissions reduction is the most important issue related to the built environment within the context of the EU Green Deal agenda as well as worldwide initiatives of climate change mitigation.  Sustainable buildings and their connection to the infrastructure of the city are major components of the energy management system of the smart city. Sustainable buildings provide a reduction in energy consumption during their entire lifecycle as well as enable the additional energy supply from renewable energy sources to the city network. Energy management companies are intensively looking for solutions on how to create and manage smart energy systems and platforms in order to efficiently integrate sustainable buildings into the smart energy networks by providing benefits for the owners of sustainable buildings as well as for the municipality of the city.

(2) Aim of the Special Issue and how the subject relates to the journal scope.

This Special Issue of Sustainability intends to focus on challenges related to sustainable buildings and their integration into the smart city energy network.

(3) Suggest themes.

In this Special Issue, original research articles and reviews are welcome. Research areas may include (but are not limited to) the following:

  • Sustainable building and energy efficiency;
  • Sustainable building energy management processes and technologies;
  • Green buildings in smart city environment;
  • Artificial intelligence (IoT, machine learning, etc.), BIM, and GIS applications for energy management in sustainable buildings and smart city;
  • Processes of energy management in sustainable building and smart city;
  • Design, operation, and optimization of smart city energy management systems.

We look forward to receiving your contributions.
