Advances in Biomass Conversion and Biofuel Production

Dear Colleagues,

World development reinforces the fact that sustainability or sustainable development is a global issue. According to the WCED (World Commission on Environment and Development, 1987), sustainability or sustainable development is development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.

Currently, there are around 169 targets, 17 goals, and 304 indicators which have been proposed to evaluate or measure sustainability. Generally, sustainability involves economic sustainability, social sustainability, and environmental sustainability, and all of these link to the sustainability of energy and resources, since energy/resource sustainability sets a solid basis for overall sustainability.

Biomass energy/resources are abundantly available, CO₂/GHG (greenhouse gas) neutral, environmentally friendly, renewable, and sustainable. They are therefore very important among renewable resources, i.e., geothermal energy, solar energy, etc. This Special Issue is focused on advances in biomass conversion and biofuel production.

In this Special Issue, original research articles and reviews are welcome. Research areas may include (but not limited to) the following:

• Properties of biomass;
• Properties of biofuel;
• Treatment of biomass (heating, acid treatment, etc.);
• Conversion of biomass (pyrolysis, gasification, fermentation, etc.);
• Upgrading of biofuel;
• Utilization of biofuel;
• Energy systems;
• Other related topics (thermodynamics, heat transfer, hydrodynamics, etc.).

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. Sustainability is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
