Smart Cities Challenges, Trends, and Technologies

Dear Colleagues,

The successful transition to a smart city is expected to improve the quality of people’s life and social sustainability via the adoption of smart technologies and intelligent systems. Although a successful smart city transition will bring various benefits to society, disruptive social and cultural changes to various regions are inevitable. As a smart city is a complex and ubiquitous system supported by diverse smart technologies, the reckless integration of ICT into traditional cities will increase confusion and resistance from society. Thus, it is instrumental to implement a holistic smart city development strategy considering aspects of smart technology as well as social and cultural change.

However, there are still various challenges and barriers to achieving a successful smart city transition and development. Currently, there is no universally agreed upon and adopted framework or strategy. There is no ‘one-size-fits-all’ solution for designing and implementing smart technologies and services to satisfy the various needs of society since the smart city encompasses various applications in areas such as infrastructure, transportation, and education. It is also challenging to consider and encourage people’s engagement and support throughout the transition process as the level of engagement will vary based on age, education, technical skills, etc.

Therefore, this Special Issue seeks papers that deal with technical (smart technologies and services) and non-technical (social challenges, urban development design, and planning) aspects of smart city development/transition. The following themes are included in the scope of the Special Issue, among others:

• Smart city development;
• Smart city development framework;
• Smart city readiness;
• Social challenges and engagement;
• Urban planning design and development;
• Smart infrastructure;
• Smart building.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. Sustainability is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
