Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

In the pursuit of a sustainable and resilient energy future, the research and development of "Sustainable Energy Storage Materials and Devices" is at the forefront of innovation. The global energy landscape is undergoing a profound transformation characterized by the shift towards cleaner and renewable energy sources. However, the intermittent nature of renewables such as solar and wind necessitates the development of advanced energy storage technologies to ensure a reliable and continuous power supply. This imperative has given rise to an intense focus on the materials and devices that form the pillar of energy storage systems.

The scientific underpinnings of sustainable energy storage are deeply rooted in materials science, chemistry, physics, and engineering. Researchers are delving into the molecular and atomic structures of materials to unlock new energy storage possibilities. The traditional energy storage solutions, such as fossil fuel-based power plants and conventional batteries, are insufficient and unsustainable in the face of escalating global energy demands and the imperative to reduce carbon emissions. In response, a new wave of research is exploring novel materials and device architectures with the aim of enhancing the energy density, improving efficiency, and minimizing the environmental impact. The advent of nanotechnology, advancements in electrochemistry, and breakthroughs in the energy conversion processes have catalyzed a paradigm shift in how we conceive and design energy storage systems. From lithium-ion batteries to emerging technologies like solid-state batteries, organic batteries, and supercapacitors, the scientific community is pushing the boundaries of innovation to create storage solutions that are not only highly efficient, but also environmentally friendly and economically viable.

The aim of this Special Issue is to provide a dedicated platform to showcase cutting-edge research and advancements in the field of "Sustainable Energy Storage Materials and Devices". This Special Issue seeks to bring together researchers, scientists, and experts who are at the forefront of developing innovative materials and devices for energy storage applications to foster a deeper understanding of the scientific principles, technological breakthroughs, and practical implications in this dynamic and critical research area. Therefore, we encourage the submission of manuscripts associated with empirical and theoretical studies that link to the main scope of this Special Issue.

In this Special Issue, original research articles and reviews are welcome. The research areas may include (but are not limited to) the following:

  • Green Materials Synthesis;
  • Advanced Battery Technologies;
  • Supercapacitors and Energy Storage Capacitors;
  • Solid-State Battery Materials and Technologies;
  • Next-Generation Cathode and Anode Materials;
  • Nanomaterials for Energy Storage;
  • Bifunctional Catalysts for Fuel Cells;
  • Sustainable Materials for Energy Harvesting and Storage Integration.

We look forward to receiving your contributions.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Sustainability is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
