Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

This Special Issue (SI) will highlight the contribution of web applications and apps to smart urban mobility. In the era of cities and under the UN 2030 Agenda for sustainable growth, cities are making an important shift regarding their thinking behind compact cities as they develop sustainable mobility plans. Issues like parking, traffic congestion and safety, shared transportation, and smart parking are among the topics where governments and the industry direct smart services, while data collection and analysis enable government’s fast—or even real-time—decision-making for deliberation of alternative transportation means, public transportation changes, urban planning, etc., and new business models appear that utilize these platforms and data. Additionally, new types of businesses in transportation appear (e.g., that utilize sensors and big data), while the transportation of things is another challenge that cities have been started phasing. Finally, web intelligence enables self-evolving smart services in SC: services that vary from typical government transactions and petitions to mobility applications (e.g., parking and route location) and to smart living apps (e.g., transactions with buildings) that can utilize machine learning and data in order to self-evolve, adapt to citizen needs, and even transform to allow customization and be more efficient and effective. In this regard, smart transportation service transformation with the use of web intelligence is another addressed topic. This SI aims to demonstrate how web applications and apps can enhance transportation services and urban mobility in general. This SI will contain articles submitted in response to a call in addition to significantly extended versions of selected articles which were peer-reviewed and presented during the 6th and 7th WebAndTheCity/AW4city Workshop in conjunction with the Web Conference (WWW2020, WWW2021).
