Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

This Special Issue features a selection of manuscripts across the whole energy landscape, focused on the fundamental development of engineering approaches for the sustainable use of materials, their adaptation into practical energy systems, and their experimental or theoretical validation via a robust understanding of their physical or chemical properties. Ranging from the use of superconducting, magnetic, dielectric, and piezoelectric materials into energy transmission, generation, and energy storage systems, to the development and progress of semiconductor, polymer, and organic and inorganic compounds into photovoltaics, fuel cells, and other energy conversion systems, this issue forges strong interdisciplinary links across the Physical Sciences and the overall Engineering portfolio, supporting the advances of new and existing materials for energy applications. Particular attention is given to disruptive technologies and materials applications which can be a game changer into the 2050 sustainability greenhouse emissions targets, including comprehensive reviews and original research articles for early-stage and well-stablished technologies. We encourage research into the next generation of solar PV materials, functional materials for the progress of fuel cells and energy storage devices, as well as advanced polymers, superconducting materials, and magnetic materials for the development of resilient power generation, distribution, and transmission systems. Robust contributions on computational methods, numerical modeling, or analytical understanding of material properties for energy applications are welcomed, as long as a clear validation of the method proposed is stated either from their own experimental proof or by well-acknowledged evidence reported in the literature. Likewise, experimental methods including synthesis characterization, and processing of materials for energy applications are acknowledged, as long as the disclosed method allows the reproducibility of the findings, and the publication represents a definite progress in scientific knowledge. In special cases, perspectives, communications, and viewpoints related to the engineering of materials will be considered, as long as they discuss the sustainability aspects of the implementation of these technologies into the commercial energy sector, for which we would encourage the author to contact the editor at an early stage.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Sustainability is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
