Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Water is a finite natural resource, essential for life on the planet, in such a way that guaranteeing the availability of water and its sustainable management and sanitation for all is one of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) promoted by the UN. Water in its natural environment follows a circular model that ensures water resources by regulating the flow of water and ensuring water quality. However, in human-managed systems that follow a linear model of economic growth, water degrades qualitatively after use, becoming unfit for further use by both humans and ecosystems. Under the current model of consumption, the depletion of water resources is a reality that we will face if we do not promote a paradigm shift.

In recent years, the circular economy model, which aligns economic results with environmental ones, has been the center of attention among political and business leaders, and is presented as a sustainable alternative to the current model of production and consumption (linear economy). At the same time, it opens business opportunities and economic growth with innovation as a key element. Its objective is that the value of products and resources is maintained in the economy for as long as possible, minimizing the generation of waste.

Manuscripts are welcome that address the circular economy of water as a process that involves, through the application of technical–social tools and the commitment of all the agents involved, closing the cycle and making the system regenerative through its design so that the water remains of good quality, generating important benefits: efficient allocation of the resource, reducing pressure on natural systems, minimizing negative externalities on natural systems, regenerating natural capital or less energy use.

For this Special Issue, papers are requested that address, among others, the following topics:

  • Water footprint: blue, green, grey.
  • Wastewater treatment/reclamation/recycling.
  • Water conservation.
  • Water management.
  • Water supply.
  • Energy efficiency.
  • Hydraulics and hydrological cycle.
  • Water sector: agriculture, industry, urban.
  • Integrated water resources management.
  • Water engineering.
  • Water technology.
  • Water innovation.
  • Water scarcity.
  • Monitoring.
  • Water resources planning.
  • Water economy.
  • Water quality.

In summary, this Special Issue invites the submission of articles examining trends and initiatives in Integrated Circular Economy of Water, employing original methodologies and offering interesting empirical insights and novel theoretical contributions and reviews.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Water is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
