Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The biogeochemistry of aquatic systems is a complex interplay of chemical, biological, and geological processes. Nowadays, it is increasingly challenged by the impacts of climate change and human activities that force it to undergo complex transformations. The resilience of aquatic ecosystems to various stress factors depends on their ability to adapt to and/or recover from new conditions. Current approaches to assessing the risk of anthropogenic stressors to aquatic ecosystems have mostly been developed for single stressors, whereas the cumulative effects of multiple stressors can lead to nonlinear effects and ecological surprises. Understanding the mechanisms by which multiple stressors affect aquatic dynamics is not only a scientific challenge, but also a critical step towards sustainable ecosystem management practice that leads to healthy aquatic ecosystems with rich biodiversity.

We invite high-quality contributions that broaden our perspective and provide insights into the complex biochemical dynamics of aquatic systems under various environmental stressors to ultimately support the conservation and management of vital aquatic resources.

This Special Issue aims to gather studies that cover all aspects of this topic, and we encourage scientists around the world to contribute their original research papers and reviews. Contributions from monitoring programs, field experiments, and associated laboratory/modelling studies that deliver broadly relevant data are welcome. Papers may address several different topics, including (but not limited to) the following:

  • Biogeochemical cycles in diverse aquatic systems, ranging from freshwater lakes to marine and atmospheric environments;
  • The multiple impacts of climate change and anthropogenic activities on aquatic ecosystems;
  • The ability of aquatic systems to adapt to changing conditions and maintain their ecological functions;
  • Coastal aquatic regions and their unique biogeochemical responses to stressors;
  • Specific atmospheric and terrestrial events that maintain ecological balance.
  • Innovative approaches and techniques for studying biogeochemical processes in aquatic systems.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Water is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
