Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Climate change and energy supply have been important topics for the international agenda. At present, bioenergy is the most widely-applied renewable energy source that, if energy balances are positive, does not contribute to climate change. However, bioenergy production requires freshwater of sufficient quality, a resource that is already scarce. This Special Issue invites research articles on the topic of “Bioenergy and Water”. It is expected that bioenergy will play an important role in future energy supply, for transport, heat and electricity. The three feedstock categories are agriculture (crops), forestry (wood) and waste (e.g., crop or forestry residues, household waste). Many studies have shown the impact of bioenergy production on water. If future energy supplies include more, and a larger share, of bioenergy than today, sustainable water management is essential.

This Special Issue is open to papers advancing knowledge on water and bioenergy relationships or showing innovative applications. We welcome, for example, papers that analyze ways to improve efficient water use, or to decrease water pollution. Papers on the comparison of water footprints of different types of bioenergy would also be most welcome. We also encourage papers on global bioenergy scenarios and water, including the role of new forms of bioenergy, such as second-generation biofuels from residues, or on trade-offs between water, land and carbon footprints related to bioenergy production.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Water is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
