Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

The manuscript describes the first record of Dutch elm disease in South Korea. The abstract is concise and provides a summary of the manuscript. The manuscript is also well written and offers new knowledge on this emerging disease in South Korea.

I have some comments regarding the manuscript, which I listed below.

Please explain the purpose for which the twigs of U. macrocarpa were added to the medium in more detail. Were they surface sterilised or perhaps autoclaved? This section should be described in the methodology part of the manuscript. Could you please upload a better quality photo of the fig.1c? After printing, the symptoms might not be visible to a reader. The manuscript would gain value if a photograph of the fungal culture and pictures of the pathogenicity tests carried out in the study were added. In lines 79, 85, 93 and others, please, remove the space between the number and the °C symbol. Figure 2, titled “The insect vector, Scolytus jacobsoni, in brood galleries”, does not show the insect in a gallery. Please change the title. Also, information on the protection activities of elm trees carried on the site would enrich the manuscript
