Cover Story: Hospitalization and surgery are stressful experiences for pediatric patients. Fear, nervousness and anxiety may be experienced in various forms. These negative emotions can result in maladaptive behaviors such as feeding difficulties, enuresis, apathy, sleep disturbances and withdrawal. Predictors for these behavioral changes include age, temperament and family status. Cortisol is secreted in response to stressful situations, and salivary levels have been demonstrated to accurately reflect pediatric stress responses. Various pharmacological and non-pharmacological methods have been used to alleviate hospital-associated stressful situations in children. This systematic review investigates the ability of various non-pharmacological techniques to reduce stress-related salivary cortisol levels in pediatric patients. View this paper
