Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

Dear Authors

The article is very interesting and informative. It would be a valuable asset for further research and practice of architectural and urban design, particularly in the fields of reconstruction, revitalization and reuse, i.e., regeneration.

The structure and contents are finely tuned and precisely presented. I have two major comments. The sentences are too long. They have too many "and" which ruins the clarity and precision of the written material. Please, run through the article again and cut sentences at least on two, and sometimes even in tree parts. The difference between goal, challenge, contribution and results is sometimes blurred. Ensure not to interchange those notions, especially in the introductory part. Also, consider adding references from around the world as this will enable the research to be applied world widely.

Abstract is coherent in its first part. The second part from line 18 to 26 needs division. Also use words like the main goal, the key challenge, the contribution as all is mixed in one sentence.

Introduction is well structured. Divide sentence line 41 to 48 to two or tree parts. Do this consequently throughout the article. You might consider changing the notion EMOTIONAL RESEARCH with RESEARCH ON EMOTIONAL PATTERNS or RESEARCH ON THE STRUCTURE OF EMOTIONAL REACTION or alike, as emotional research might be understood wrongly.

Materials and methods is nicely put and finely explorative.

Results. The author might consider giving a visual representative of architecture he implies to in this article as for the general public to understand more clearly the case study proposed.

Discussion section should be divided on two separate paragraph.

Dear Reviewer:

Good afternoon! Thank you very much for reviewing our paper in your busy schedule.

We are re-submitted the manuscript ID: Sustainability- 1891666 - Research on Emotional-Cultural Ecological Design System of Vernacular Architecture for your consideration.

In response to the two comments made by the teacher, we reply as follows.

  1. Recommendation:The structure and contents are finely tuned and precisely presented.

Reply: Based on our teacher's suggestions, we carefully revised the paper's overall structure, phrasing, and language to ensure clarity and accuracy. Secondly, we have clearly defined the concepts between the objectives, challenges, contributions, and results of the thesis. Also, references from all over the world were attended in the introduction section to fully demonstrate the research on vernacular architecture at home and abroad.

  1. Recommendation: Abstract is coherent in its first part.

ReplyBased on the teacher's suggestion, we clearly defined and divided the concept between the objectives, challenges, contributions, and results of the paper in the abstract into sentences. Also, with the teacher's advice, the concept of EMOTIONAL RESEARCH in the introduction and other parts of the article was changed to RESEARCH ON EMOTIONAL PATTERNS.

  1. Recommendation: Results. The author might consider giving a visual representative of architecture he implies to in this article as for the general public to understand more clearly the case study proposed.

Discussion section should be divided on two separate paragraph.

ReplyAccording to the teacher's suggestion, we added several cases of vernacular architecture in the result section of the paper. We selected the architectural form of "a seal" in Wolong ancient fishing village in Kunming, as an example to demonstrate the operation mechanism of the theoretical research framework. Secondly, the discussion section was revised and changed into two parts, including a summary discussion of the domestic and international literature review and a discussion of this paper's research process and results.

In addition, the case we added to the comments needs to be explained to the instructor. The original paper was intended to demonstrate the operational mechanism of the theoretical framework by using Dehong Prefecture as an example. However, because Dehong Prefecture is located in the border area of Yunnan Province and affected by the epidemic control policy, the project team could not reach Dehong Prefecture on time for fieldwork, so some field research information was lacking. Therefore, vernacular architecture cases from other regions were added in this revision for result verification. Also, an English teacher was invited to revise the language of the article.

In conclusion, our thesis, after listening to the teacher's comments to modify the structure of the article, the definition of concepts, and the addition of cases from different regions, enriched the research meaning and value of the theoretical research framework of the thesis, making it more transparent and more universal. We are very grateful to our teacher for the valuable comments that significantly improved the thesis.

Thank you for your consideration. I am looking forward to hearing from you.

The manuscript should be complemented with more deepness on sustainability, architecture and heritage components. Architectural examples, lifecycle temporal dynamics, as well as reflection of lifestyle beyond religion should be provided. In fact, a full/complete example should be provided to exemplify the operation of the framework at the time of also discussing alternatives.

  1. Recommendation:The manuscript should be complemented with more deepness on sustainability, architecture and heritage components. Architectural examples, lifecycle temporal dynamics, as well as reflection of lifestyle beyond religion should be provided.

Reply: Based on our teacher's suggestion, we added more examples of vernacular architecture in the result section of the thesis to show. For example, the Nu ethnic vernacular architecture in Nujiang Lisu Autonomous Prefecture, the mushroom house in Azheke, Yuanyang County, Honghe Prefecture, and the "one seal" architecture in the ancient fishing village of Wolong, Kunming. The architectural examples from different regions are used to support the understanding of the subject dimension, spatial dimension, and cultural dimension in the theoretical research framework.

  1. Recommendation: In fact, a full/complete example should be provided to exemplify the operation of the framework at the time of also discussing alternatives.

ReplyBased on our teacher's suggestion, we added the "one seal" architectural form of the ancient fishing village of Wolong in Kunming to the evaluation and analysis matrix of the theoretical research framework in the thesis results. Through field research on the residents of Wolong fishing village and the architectural form of "one seal," we reflected that the interaction between residents and social culture has an inherent role in determining vernacular architecture. Therefore, taking the architectural form of "one seal" as an example, we decompose it through the evaluation analysis matrix in the theoretical research framework to show the operation mechanism of the academic research framework.

In addition, the case we added to the two comments needs to be explained to the instructor. The original paper was intended to demonstrate the operational mechanism of the theoretical framework by using Dehong Prefecture as an example. However, because Dehong Prefecture is located in the border area of Yunnan Province and affected by the epidemic control policy, the project team could not reach Dehong Prefecture on time for fieldwork, so some field research materials were lacking. Therefore, vernacular architecture cases from other regions were added in this revision for result verification. Also, an English teacher was hired to revise the language of the article.

In conclusion, after adding cases from different regions with the advice of our teachers, our thesis enriched the research significance and value of the theoretical research framework and made it more universal. We are very grateful to the teachers for their valuable comments that significantly improved the thesis.

Thank you for your consideration. I am looking forward to hearing from you.

Reviewer 4 Report

In “Research on Emotional-Cultural Ecological Design System of 2 Traditional Dwelling Architecture in Dehong” the authors explore the situation of traditional residential architecture in China, with an emphasis on the coexistence between its heritage and the emotional needs of residents and cultural ecology. The study is well designed and brings important results to the area, however the bases of the study and its limitations still need further clarification.

In addition to this point, I have the following suggestions:

1.     L19-25 – Here is the main contribution of the article, so it should be much clearer than the one presented.

2.     L31 – Right after the abstract appears a figure. This figure is not referenced and has no captions for understanding. The texts in the figure are too long. I suggest putting concise texts in this figure.

3.     L35 – I suggest justifying why this expression "traditional residential architecture" was chosen. Why not also use other equivalent expressions? Wouldn't this expression be already inducing the results?

I also suggest explaining what "in the advanced search type" means. Did you use full text of the articles?

4.     L145 - The authors need to explain in the manuscript how "the comparative analysis of research levels in Figure 2, domestic scholars are currently more concerned with technical". The authors need to explain in the text how they analyzed this subject and compared the different ways.

5.     L164-167 – I suggest explaining in the text how you found these terms in the analyzed articles. I suggest explaining in the text why these terms are more important than the other terms that also appear in the article.

6.     L264-271 – From my point of view there is no proof from this analysis. I suggest that the authors position themselves within the scope of the research done and its consequent results.

7.     L460 – May be the way of collecting information from the researched articles has some relations with the study results. Would the authors consider including in this section a discussion of this point?

Dear Reviewer:

Good afternoon! Thank you very much for reviewing our paper in your busy schedule.

We are re-submitted the manuscript ID: Sustainability- 1891666 - Research on Emotional-Cultural Ecological Design System of Vernacular Architecture for your consideration.

In response to the two comments made by the teacher, we reply as follows.

  1. Recommendation: The study is well designed and brings important results to the area, however the bases of the study and its limitations still need further clarification.

Reply: Based on the teacher's suggestions, we carefully revised the basis and limitations of the study in the conclusion section of the paper to ensure a rational and accurate structure.

  1. Recommendation: L19-25 – Here is the main contribution of the article, so it should be much clearer than the one presented.

Reply: Based on the teachers' comments, the abstract section was carefully revised in terms of research objectives, research goals, and research contributions to make its content clearer and more explicit.

  1. Recommendation: L31 – Right after the abstract appears a figure. This figure is not referenced and has no captions for understanding. The texts in the figure are too long. I suggest putting concise texts in this figure.

Reply: Teacher, the graphic abstract is provided according to the requirements inside the Instructions for Authors manual and is a summary of the entire structure of the article, so there are no references or topics. The text of the graphic abstract has been streamlined according to the teacher's comments.

  1. Recommendation: L35 – I suggest justifying why this expression "traditional residential architecture" was chosen. Why not also use other equivalent expressions? Wouldn't this expression be already inducing the results?

I also suggest explaining what "in the advanced search type" means. Did you use full text of the articles?

Reply: First, we would like to explain that we chose "traditional residential architecture" to express the meaning of original residential architecture in rural or ethnic villages.  After listening to the teacher's suggestion, we consulted some materials and felt that "vernacular architecture" was more appropriate, so we changed "traditional residential architecture" to "vernacular architecture."  Also, we would like to explain that "in the advanced search type" is one of the options for filtering the type of articles in the China Knowledge Network.  It is possible that the expression is not appropriate and may cause misunderstanding, so this term has been deleted in the paper and directly expressed as follows: Article selection type includes "SCI," "EI," "CSSCI, "CSCD," "Peking University Chinese core journals."

  1. Recommendation: L145 - The authors need to explain in the manuscript how "the comparative analysis of research levels in Figure 2, domestic scholars are currently more concerned with technical". The authors need to explain in the text how they analyzed this subject and compared the different ways.

Reply: Based on the teacher's comments, we accurately described and analyzed the data of the total number of publications at the "technical research" level and the "applied basic research" level in Figure 2 of the paper. At the same time, comparing the two data sets explains the trend that the number of publications at the "technical research" level is higher than that at the "applied basic research" level in China.

  1. Recommendation: L164-167 – I suggest explaining in the text how you found these terms in the analyzed articles. I suggest explaining in the text why these terms are more important than the other terms that also appear in the article.

Reply: First, we explain that the visualization method of literature cross-citation network analysis belongs to a tool that comes with the database of China Knowledge Network, which serves the same purpose as the keyword reciprocity network in Citespace. Second, the larger circle area in Figure 3 represents the higher number of literature cross-citations, reflecting China's current hotspot of vernacular architecture research.  So, according to the teacher's comments, we carefully revised the description of this part in the paper to present the data results more clearly.

  1. Recommendation: L264-271 – From my point of view there is no proof from this analysis. I suggest that the authors position themselves within the scope of the research done and its consequent results.

Reply: Based on the teacher's suggestions, we carefully revised the paper's results section in conjunction with the data analysis in the second part.

  1. Recommendation: L460 – May be the way of collecting information from the researched articles has some relations with the study results. Would the authors consider including in this section a discussion of this point?

Reply: Based on the teacher's suggestion, we revised the discussion section of the paper and changed it into two parts, including a summary discussion of the domestic and international literature review and a discussion of the research process and results of this paper.

In conclusion, our paper has been revised with our teacher's advice to make the structure of the article, language, related concepts, conclusion, and discussion section clearer and more reasonable. We are very grateful to our teacher for her valuable comments, which significantly improved the paper.

Thank you for your consideration. I am looking forward to hearing from you.

Round 2

Reviewer 2 Report

Although the manuscript has been significantly improved, some important aspects remain questionable. Mostly, a more scholarly use of language should be adopted. Superlatives need to be removed. When authors make appreciation are made, there have to be make it clear that represent personal preferences. "Emotional-cultural design system" does not seem well fit to the research and proposal presented, as "emotional" has more precise use in literature, a better choice of concept can be "Subjective-cultural design ...". Similarly,  "theory" word-concept use appear exaggerated and "framework" can be more appropriated.

The description of the figures must be consistent and clearly show what is being described. Authors should make a careful reading to eliminate grammatical and punctuation mistakes.
