Author Response

Dear reviewer,

This manuscript is in need of major revision, including but not limited to: reordering of manuscript sections, English language use and clarity, addition of information later in the manuscript that should have been introduced in the methods section, and an analysis plan that was missing.

Thanks for your review.

First, our manuscript has undergone professional English polishing (AJE), which is proved as follows:

Second, we have reordered it according to your opinion, details are as follows:

  1. 1.Introduction

1.1 Exposure to the forest environment can effectively enhance public's immunity

1.2 Exposure to the forest environment can effectively promote public's physical health

1.3 Exposure to the forest environment can effectively improve public's mental health

  1. Materials and Methods

2.1 Sample selection and method

2.2 Index Selection

2.2.1 Physiological Stress Index

2.2.2 Psychological Stress Index

2.3 Experimental design

  1. 3.Results

3.2.1 Physiological Recovery

3.2.2 Psychological Recovery

  1. Discussion

4.1 Restoration effect and difference of users in forest environment with different vegetation layout

4.2 Restoration effect and difference of users in forest environment with different vegetation layout

4.3 Rationality and Limitations

4.3.1 Rationality:

4.3.2 Limitations:

4.3.3 Future Research

  1. Conclusion

Third, According to your suggestion and our group discussion, we all agreed that it is more appropriate to change Study Areas and Study Materials to "Sample selection and method".  See as Line 183 in Page 4.

Then, we added the limitation and rationality of the futuer research, and the future research. See as Line 663-685 in Page 19, details are as follows:

 4.3.3 Future Research

According to the shortcomings in our research, we think that the future research can be deeply analyzed from the following two aspects:

â‘ Explore whether the distribution of vegetation in different types of forest environment will affect users' physical and mental recovery  is a subject for further analysis by the research group in the future. This will better reveal how the vegetation distribution in a forest environment can effectively promote users' physical and mental health. This will also help the managers of forest environmental resources to plan, design and make sustainable use of restorative plant resources.

â‘¡The deviation of seasonal elements will lead to corresponding changes in the color and spatial sense of the scene. Therefore, it is also one of our important topics in the future to further explore the influence of seasonal changes on people's physical and mental recovery, so as to make more efficient use of sustainable forest landscape resources.

â‘¢In addition, it is interesting and meaningful to discuss the physiological and psychological recovery of different groups of user in the forest environment when the vegetation distribution changes, which can be used as a variable for future research.

Finally, we have revised our manuscript one by one according to your opinions. The specific modifications are as follows:

Comment 1:

It has been proved

Modify 1:

Thank you for your suggestion, and we have made corresponding changes according to your suggestion.

See as Line 7-8 in Page 1, details are as follows:

Evidence support that forest environment is beneficial to people's health, and further discussion on the dose response between environmental attribute and physical and mental recovery has been widely carried out by scholars.

Comment 2:

please, throughout the paper use "the forest environment," not "forest environment."

Modify 2:

Thank you for your suggestion, and we have made corresponding changes according to your suggestion.

Comment 3:

green should be "greenspace" and the same for "high quality greenspace."

Modify 3:

Thank you for your suggestion.

According to your suggestion, we change “green” and “high quality green” to “greenspace” and “high quality greenspace”.

See as Line 43 in Page 1.

Comment 4:

“recreational function and potential aesthetic quality of forest environment have gradually become the focus and hot issue of the whole society.”

for society as a whole.

Modify 4:

Thank you for your suggestion, according to your suggestion, we have already change “the whole society” to “for society as a whole”.

See as Line 52 in Page 2.

Comment 5:

“It is also pointed out that people can reduce the stress hormone level”

Here it is "stress hormone levels,"

Modify 5:

Thank you for your suggestion, and we have made corresponding changes according to your suggestion. Change “the stress hormone level” to “tress hormone levels”.

See as Line 97 in Page 3.

Comment 6:

“It is pointed out that the contact natural environment is not only beneficial to public's health, but also has a significant correlation between natural experience and positive mental health results (emotional improvement and stress reduction) .”

I do not understand this phrase, can you clarify this further?

Modify 6:

First, thank you for your comment.

Second, this is a mistake in our expression. After discussion in our group, 为all agreed that it is more appropriate to change "contact natural environment" to "enjoy and exercise in the natural environment". See as Line 116 in Page 3.

Comment 7:

“All the above studies show that even a short few minutes of contact with the forest environment will play a positive role in people's body and mind. Therefore, it is necessary to understand the influence of environmental attributes on users' physical and mental recovery, to create a high-quality healthy forest environment for user.”

English language editing is needed. This should be "All of the above studies...""forest environments for users.”

Modify 7:

Thank you for your suggestion, and we have already change “All the above studies” to “All of the above studies” and change “forest environment for user” to “forest environments for users”.

See as Line 126 in Page 3.

Comment 8:

“Research by Shi pointed out that the forest environment composed of different tree species has different effects on people's physical and mental recovery. Zeng also pointed out that in  planning and designing forest environment, more trees can be used to enrich the colors of forests in different seasons, to enhance people's positive emotions.”

different or diverse? Consider changing.

designing

Modify 8:

Thank you for your suggestion, and we have already change “different” to “diverse” and change “design” to “designing”.

See as Line 133 and Line 135 in Page 3.

Comment 9:

“Some open green spaces have the best effect of alleviating people's negative emotions, while closed green spaces have the worst effect of restoring them.”

define closed greenspaces. this is unclear

Modify 9:

Thank you for your suggestion, and we have already define closed greenspaces. See as Line 142-143 in Page 3, details are as follows:

Some open green spaces have the best effect of alleviating people's negative emotions, while closed green spaces (over 70% of trees/shrubs dominate the canopy coverage) have the worst effect of restoring them.

Comment 10:

“The specific objectives are as follows: ”

these that follow here are not objectives, they are research questions. please either change and say they are research questions, or change the format to objectives.

Modify 10:

Thank you for your suggestion. Based on your suggestion we change “The specific objectives are as follows:” to “The specific research questions are as follows:”.

See as Line 176 in Page 4.

Comment 11:

“First, with the increasing application of virtual reality evaluation methods in environmental-related research, its scientificity and reliability have been generally accepted by scholars at home and abroad”

use of this term (scientificity) is unclear

Modify 11:

Thank you for your suggestion.

According to your suggestion, after our group discussion, we think that the word universality is more accurate. So we changed scientificity to universality. See as Line 186 in Page 4.

Comment 12:

“That is, the user's experience of virtual reality landscape environment can effectively replace the experience of on-site environment,”

forest immersion

Modify 12:

Yes, our experiment is really an immersive forest experience. According to your suggestion, we think it is more appropriate to change "on-site environment" to "on-site forest immersion environment".

See as Line 189 in Page 4.

Comment 13:

“Therefore, the 360 video of the forest environment is selected as the experimental material in this study.”

was. Use past tense in the reporting of the study

Modify 13:

Thank you for your suggestion, and we have already change “is” to “was.

See as Line 195 in Page 4.

Comment 14:

“1) Based on the representativeness and universality of the forest environment, Qipans Mountain Scenic Area, Houshi National Forest Park and Hemu National Forest Park in the northern part of China are finally determined as the research site after on-site investigation and screening (Figure 1-A).”

sites

Modify 14:

Thank you for your suggestion, and we have already change “site” to “sites.

See as Line 201 in Page 5.

Comment 15:

“To avoid the influence of seasons and weather conditions on users' subjective feelings, the experimental materials ...”

What does this mean (experimental materials)?

Modify 15:

Thank you for your suggestion.

First, because our experiment is an immersive VR experience, the video we watched during the experiment is 360°Video.

Second, we collect the video in the experiment in the real scene.

Therefore, the experimental material here refers to the 360° Video collected in the real forest environment. See Figure 1-C for the panoramic photos derived from it.

Comment 16:

“...we used the instrument of Mindband (SICHIRAY) and Sphygmomanometer (Omron) to measure five physiological indexes, namely β, α, SBP, DBP and HR”

what does this mean? write out the instrument title, then put the abbreviation into parentheses. after that you can use the abbrev.

the blood pressure cuff does not record the EEG.

what does this mean (β, α)?

Modify 16:

Thank you for your suggestion.

First, the contents in brackets indicate the brand of experimental instruments. According to your suggestion, we have made some modifications in this paper, and change “MindBand (Sichiray)” and “Sphygmomanometer (Omron)” to “MindBand (Brand: Sichiray)” and “Sphygmomanometer (Brand: Omron)”. See as Line 233-234 in Page 6-7.

Second, the Sphygmomanometer really can't record EEG. We use Mindband to record the subjects' EEG. Here, we juxtapose Mindband and Sphygmomanometer, and their recorded EEG indicators (β, α) and blood pressure (SBP, DBP and HR) are also juxtaposed in the back.

Then, these are two EEG indicators to detect the brain activity of the subjects. Higher β wave means higher the degree of concentration. Higher α wave means higher the degree of relaxation.

Comment 17:

“Electroencephalogram (EGG)”

Abbreviation should be EEG

Modify 17:

Thank you for your advice. This is indeed our mistake, and we have revised this part accordingly. See as Line 240 in Page 6, Line 342 in Page 10, Line 425 in Page 13, Line 526 in Page 16.

Comment 18:

“The research of Blasco showed that students have certain aesthetic judgment ability on the natural environmen,...”

Spelling (environmen)

Modify 18:

Thank you for your advice. This is indeed our mistake, and we have already change “environmen” to “environment”. See as Line 265 in Page 8.

Comment 19:

“wear and debug the relevant experimental instruments.”

unclear, explain

Modify 19:

Thank you for your suggestion. This is really a problem of our language expression. In order to ensure that the EEG indexes of each subject can be collected normally and the viewing landscape can be smooth, we will wear and debug the experimental instrument (Mindband) before the experiment begins.

According to your suggestion, we change “wear and debug the relevant experimental instrument to "wear and debug the Mindband."

See as Line 278 in Page 8.

Comment 20:

“Second, the subject were tested by the trier social stress test (TSST)...”

add to measures above

Modify 20:

First, thank you for your advice.

Second, TSST here is a stress pressurization method and does not measure indicators.

Finally, the stress pressurization method in this study includes 1 minute of verbal calculation and noise. See as Line 288-289 in Page 8, details are as follows:

Second, the subject were tested by the trier social stress test (TSST), which includes noise and verbal calculation for 1 minute, in order to induce the subjects' acute stress.

Comment 21:

“After the virtual environment experience, the subject were demanded to fill in the scale of BPOMOS and PANAS...”

“were demanded to”--inappropriate wording here. They were asked, right?

Modify 21:

First, here is a part of the experiment, and the subjects need to fill in the corresponding scale after viewinging the landscape.

Second, the tone of demanded is really a bit inappropriate, so we changed “After the virtual environment experience, the subject were demanded to fill in the scale of BPOMOS and PANAS, and the measured value were named as posttest” to After the virtual environment experience, the subject need to fill in the scale of BPOMOS and PANAS, and the measured value were named as posttest. after group discussion. See as Line 295 in Page 8.

Comment 22:

“Collect the experimental data of the subject and give them gifts at random.”

what does this mean? was this fair treatment?

Modify 22:

First, the subjects in our experiment were openly recruited in university.

Second, we just regard the small gift as the last link of the whole experiment, which is equivalent to a souvenir. However, due to the large number of recruits, the gifts purchased are small souvenirs with considerable value but various types. Therefore, gifts are distributed randomly.

According to the above, we think that the experimental data obtained in this study and the gifts given randomly to each subject are fair.

And we change “Collect the experimental data of the subject and give them gifts at random.” to The experimental data of the subjects were collected, and gifts were given at random.. See as Line 299-300 in Page 9.

Thanks again for your valuable feedback.

Yours sincerely,

Reviewer 2 Report

Comments and Suggestions for Authors Overall, the study is extremely interesting and the analysis is carried out with scientific rigour. However, some perplexities arise with regard to certain aspects: Firstly, the sample studied is homogeneous in its characteristics, but far removed from the reality of the general population. This could significantly affect the validity of the study, as the responses of other social classes, especially those representing the majority of the population, could be characterised by a different sensitivity to these stimuli. For example, groups of individuals belonging to different socio-economic classes might respond differently to the same factors, for various reasons ranging from cultural to different life experiences. This lack of representativeness of the sample could lead to conclusions that cannot be generalised to the whole population. Furthermore, we speak of physical and mental recovery in a broad sense, without ever making specific references in the narrow sense that would allow us to understand what the physiological causes of the human being really need to be alleviated. Greater precision in this area would be desirable to identify the biological and psychological mechanisms involved in the recovery process. With regard to vegetation, the study focused on a limited time period. This is puzzling since, over the course of the year, vegetation is subject to numerous seasonal changes. It would be interesting to verify which of these changes is the most impactful and effective in mitigating stressful situations. Analysing these changes could provide more detailed information on the interaction between the natural environment and human well-being. In conclusion, the study offers interesting insights and highlights the importance of the natural environment for human psychophysical well-being, but there are some limitations that could be addressed in the future to improve the understanding of these phenomena. A more representative sample and a more detailed analysis of the physiological causes and seasonal effects of vegetation could provide more robust and generalisable results. Please check the correct formatting of text, figures, tables and references.

Author Response

Dear reviewer,

Overall, the study is extremely interesting and the analysis is carried out with scientific rigour.

Thanks for your review.

According to the demographic characteristics of the participants obtained in this paper, this study mainly collected data from masters of various majors in agricultural universities under 25 years old. Although there have been studies (Guo et al., 2017; Van Den Berg et al., 2016) showing that the student's data is representative(Zhang et al., 2019). However, on the other hand, as the author mentioned earlier, under the social background of China's rapid urbanization and the construction of a large number of forest parks, it will inevitably lead to problems such as poor landscape quality in the planning and design of forest parks (Wei et al., 2004).

So, it is interesting and meaningful to discuss the physiological and psychological recovery of different groups (professional background, sex, etc.) of user in the forest environment when the vegetation distribution changes, which can be used as a variable for future research. See as Line 681-685 in Page 19.

Thanks for your review.

On the one hand, high-quality forest landscape can be understood as an important ecosystem service, which positively affects human health and well-being. In other words, the intangible benefits of forest landscape will affect people's physical and mental health.

On the other hand, research by Wu in 2022 showed that high-quality forest landscape plays a vital role in ecosystem services, and puts forward that "how to scientifically and objectively evaluate the quality of forest landscape is not only a research hotspot of forest recreation, but also an important mission of forest resource management implemented by forestry departments.".

When discussing the influence of forest landscape on human core health, we record people's observation of forest landscape environment and quantify people's physiological and emotional changes when they watch forest landscape. However, the forest environment is rich, changeable and accidental, and it does not directly affect people's physiological functions and produce physiological effects like biological drugs. A leaf, a bird, or a strange stone in some forests can arouse people's interest in it and make people happy physically and mentally, which is influenced by the environment itself and also by the ripple effect derived from the environment. This is also the function and charm of forest resources.

As the reviewer said, how to more accurately analyze the biological and psychological mechanisms involved in the process of forest restoration to people when appreciating forest landscape is what we need to further study and explore in the future.

At the same time, it is very interesting and important to discuss the physiological and psychological changes brought by the forest landscape with the seasonal changes. As the reviewer said, vegetation will be affected by many seasonal changes in a year. Verifying which of these changes is the most influential and effective in relieving stress, and revealing this problem will clarify what kind of benefits forests bring to people from a longer time line, which is also one of the directions for our research group to further explore in the future. Similarly, we have added this part to the future research of the manuscript.

See as Line 675-680 in Page 19, details are as follows:

â‘¡The deviation of seasonal elements will lead to corresponding changes in the color and spatial sense of the scene. Therefore, it is also one of our important topics in the future to further explore the influence of seasonal changes on people's physical and mental recovery, so as to make more efficient use of sustainable forest landscape resources.

Finally, we have revised our manuscript one by one according to your opinions. The specific modifications are as follows:

Comment 1:

please, use the right template adopted by MDPI

And use the correct format of citation adopted by MDPI

Modify 1:

Thank you for your suggestion, and we have made corresponding changes according to the right template adopted by MDPI.

Comment 2:

“Research of Giacinto and others showed that the fungicides..."

Which (fungicides) would be?

Modify 2:

Thank you for your suggestion.

First, this is our mistake.

Second, we consulted relevant references and thought that phytoncide this word could express our meaning more accurately. Therefore, we changed “fungicideto phytoncide (α-pinene and D-limonene etc.).

See as Line 77 in Page 2.

Comment 3:

"...the experimental materials in this study were all carried out in the center of the sample plot (Figure 1-B) and at a height of 100 centimetre from April 30 to May 3, 2023 at 10: 00 am on sunny days "

Why? What led to the consideration of these parameters and the exclusion of all others available?

Modify 3:

Thank you for your suggestion.

First,about “at a height of 100 centimetre”.

Here, because our experiment is to let the subjects sit in a chair and view the VR experimental materials (360°Video). According to the previous research and the results of our pre-experiment, it shows that the video taken by the subjects sitting in a chair at a height of 1 meter is equivalent to their outdoor experience. Too high will make the subjects feel dizzy, while too low will make the subjects feel oppressive. Therefore, all the experimental materials in this experiment are collected at a height of 1 meter.

Secondd, about from April 30 to May 3, 2023 at 10: 00 am on sunny days.

Because this study mainly discusses the influence of vegetation distribution on the physical and mental recovery of the subjects, previous studies have pointed out that seasonal and weather changes will also have an impact on the physical and mental recovery of the subjects. Therefore, in order to control the variables and make all the experimental materials in this study at the same level, we control the time accordingly to reduce the influence of these factors on the subjects.

Comment 4:

Use Fig. or Figure. Ensure consistency between the two terms

Modify 4:

Thank you for your suggestion, according to your suggestion, we have already change “Fig.” to “Figure”.

Comment 5:

Few references

Modify 5:

Thank you for your suggestion.

According to your and editor opinion, we added some contents in the part of introduction and added references accordingly.

Thanks again for your valuable feedback.

Yours sincerely,

Research by Zhao showed that when the area of the site is 250-500 square meters, our physical and mental recovery effect is the best, and the recovery effect is the best when the coverage rate is 0.25-0.35 [41]. Research by An showed that 50% density broad-leaved forest landscape will make people have a stable mood and the most active vitality. However, the maximum pulse rate appeared in 100% stand density of coniferous forest and broad-leaved forest [42]. Lin pointed out that walking in urban green space with high per capita area and sitting in urban green space with low per capita area have obvious effects in improving mood [43].
