Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report (Previous Reviewer 3)

In this article submission of ‘Optimization and determination of kinetic parameters of the synthesis of 5-Lauryl-hydroxymethylfurfural catalyzed by lipases’, the authors describe an optimization of enzymatic synthesis of a lauryl derivative of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural. It is a new version of two previously rejected papers. The current version of the manuscript is improved, as the authors included results of enzyme kinetics analysis. Therefore, the manuscript can be accepted for publication in the Catalyst journal.

Reviewer 2 Report (Previous Reviewer 1)

I believe the manuscript has been significantly improved. However, the resolution of Figures should be improved before publication.

R/ In this new version, the resolution of the figures was improved as requested by the reviewer.

This manuscript is a resubmission of an earlier submission. The following is a list of the peer review reports and author responses from that submission.

Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

The manuscript entitled “Optimization of the synthesis of 5-Lauryl-hydroxymethylfurfural catalyzed by lipases” describes lipase-catalyzed esterification of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural. In this study, the experimental conditions were investigated using Box–Behnken experimental design approach.

The following comments will help the improvement of the manuscript.

1. The activity of immobilized TL lipase, immobilized RM lipase, and Novozym® 435 were 3000, 300, and 2000 U/g. However, in the experimental section “0.2 g of immobilized lipases” was used which means that the activities of enzymes were not same and comparable.

2. Fig. 3C and Fig. 5a show that yield is decreased by increasing enzyme activity. Is that correct?

Reviewer 2 Report

Dear Sirs,

Dear Authors,

I feel the article in its present form is much improved and decided to support its publication in Catalysts.

Faithfully yours,

Anonymous Reviewer

Reviewer 3 Report

Thank you very much for improving the manuscript through the author's revision. However, the scientific conclusions provided by these findings are vague and lacking in progress. It especially relates to the lack of enzyme kinetics studies. Accordingly, I regret not making a recommendation for publication.
