Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

I have only to suggestions/questions to the Authors:

a. Why do they claim that it is a new method, since their analysis is based on already known models

b. They should explain in more detail the Otsu method, since its present form misleads the reader.

Reviewer 2 Report

The article is very interesting. The article presents the fresh theme about change of shape and area of the island.

1) Some suggestions for improvements of comprehension:

Add how the GEE was used for calculation of NDWI - there is any ready-function or it was necessary write a script?

row 191 and 192 - You write about limit of 0.2 for the NDWI value interval to classify water and non-water. But in some literature is limit 0.3 or 0 ? Your limit is taken experimentally of from any literature? Please, cite the literature about limit of interval.

Figure 5 - Is it possible to add nay line with trend of change - maybe very smoother and expressed by dotted line. It is hart to read the graph from the point to follow the trend in time of change both red island area and blue line area. Maybe recommendation to change the ratio of sides of graph - make it wider and lower (the is space on the page). The trend could be interrupted in the area of gap.

2) Necessary correction of the text:

row 111 -Citation of the same source in two ways- (Walter ...) and [32].  Please, remove the first citation.

Figure 2 The graph has not value and unit on vertical y-axis, add Reflectance and unit %.

Figure 2 - row 143 - "... four labeled white boxes.." I see only two white boxes. I am right? Where is four boxes?

Figure 5 - The title of picture contains the information about vertical line "....(solid black line)......". But it is dashed line on the picture. Please, change the word "solid" to "dashed".

Figure 6, row 318 - .... black polygon in .... It is not black polygon, it is black outline of (white) polygon. Please, write only ".... black line..." because you have also only black line in legend of both maps c and d.
