Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

The manuscript, entitled ‘The basis for reliability-based mechanical properties of structural aluminium alloys’ deals with the proof strength, the tensile strength, the Young’s modulus and the Poisson ratio of different aluminium alloys. This Reviewer suggests accepting in present form of the manuscript.

Thank you for your kind opinion about the article.

KInd regards, authors.

Reviewer 2 Report

Excellent background and rationale. Excellent citations. As a materials scientist I advocate for the creation of and the statistical analysis of aluminum databases.

Reviewer 4 Report

  1. In the abstract part, it says a statistical database of mechanical properties is lacking and will be the aim of this research.  This sounds suitable for report rather than for scientific paper.
  2. Also in abstract part, it says adjustments to nominal values can achieve an uniform reliability, and the choice of alloy and temper does not influence the reliability.  Does the uniform reliability of an alloy not determined by the alloy composition, heat treatment and processing parameters?
  3. In line 117, the purpose of this paper is to statistically evaluate the variability of mechanical properties. If the sources of the variability are revealed by the statistically analysis and some suggestions on how to reduce the variation are arisen by authors, it will benefit industry to decrease the variation through the manufacturing and then as a return could make the statistical analysis more meaningful.
  4. For the data group having test data less than 100 samples in table 2 3, 4 and , it's not necessary listed here since they are not used for later discussion.
  5. In line 380, where does γMi come from and what is for?
  6. In conclusion part, the conclusions are more likely a general description. It's not very clear about what is the main understanding or contribution in terms of the present study?
