Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

Quality management is an important subject in any industrial production field. The proposed bibliography is well constructed and useful with logical references. Of course, it is completed in section 2 with a discussion on the implementation of a zero defect system. It is probably the most interesting point of the article to take a position on this question of ZDM method engineering. The whole of part 2.1 (up to line 110) is interesting, but it lacks a critical complement in that the examples presented are for object cases, whereas the process that will be studied applies to an object-liquid-object transition (once bottled). An a priori critical discussion of the limitations of the listed implementations would be useful. The description of the process and its instrumentation is correct, a table listing the measurements, the technique used and the reference(s) of what is published is certainly missing. The coupling of image analysis, electronic nose and NIR is good, of high quality and very timely.
The formalization line 237 of the mathematical approach ZDM in the form of a multi-objective optimization problem, calls for few remarks. It is rather good, but in the vision of a method engineering text one can expect more of an expanded equation and not a generic equation (expand Xneg and X pos for example)?
Figure 2 is very classical and I am not sure that it really brings to the text.
Figures 3 and 5 are the heart of the presentation (especially figure 5). There is little to say about the text that accompanies these figures. Line 385, the multi-sensor approach is undoubtedly a key point whose text remains a bit too general. It lacks the levers for proper implementation, for reliable information, etc.
.
In the end, this is an interesting article that should be focused more on the implementation of the method and more on the example that is not used much in the text.

Dear Authors,

from my perspective I´ve some question of understanding.

  • Where is the connection between AI and ZDM? The introduction was hard to follow.
  • What is the impression of your work for small farmers?
  • After my personal feeling the structure has to be improved.
  • It´s more an comment than an research paper, isn´t it?
  • Are they any applicatin in a real case?

Warmest regards.
