Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

This interesting paper analyzes the influence of foundation deformation and variation coefficient of vehicle parameters on the reliability of vehicle-vertical-safety. The results support the conclusions and seem interesting and useful in the field of railway engineering.

The idea of the research is interesting and presents some novelty.

The manuscript topics fit enough the journal scope.

A large number of previous researches by the authors and others have been discussed and those results have been compared to the results of the current research.

Nonetheless, in the paper, there are some aspects that need additional clarification, explanation, or revision before the paper would be ready for publication.

It would be useful to highlight in tables 2 and 3 the admissible cases when the numerical value of the reliability is higher than the limit value of 0.8

The effect of track irregularity with respect to the concentrated defect considered is not clear.

References could be enriched by adding to the literature also previous studies investigating measurements method and analysis tools for rail corrugation. For example, I suggest considering:

  • doi: 10.1016/j.wear.2004.03.066

  • doi: 10.1177/0954409711422189

I think that the paper could be published in the journal after including the proposed revisions.

Reviewer 2 Report

This paper deals with a really interesting and pertinent topic, not much studied in the scientific community. The methodology and approach used are correct.

Some minor comments:

Line 263: there is an error when referencing the Figure 5 in the text.

Line 275: the word "arch" appears and it must be another one.

Line2 292 and 293: the text of each line must be on the same horizontal level.

Line 383: missing text at the end of the title of Figure 17.

Reviewer 3 Report

The article concerns research on influence of foundation deformation and vehicle parameters on the vertical safety of high-speed trains. In general, the article is suitable for publication, but requires corrections first according to notes for the author.

From the scientific point of view, the article presents the average scientific level. After taking into account the corrections presented for the authors, it is suitable for publication in the journal Applied Sciences.

The paper should be improved namely in some identified aspects:

- figures 1 and 17 are not clear enough.

- although the English is OK, the text needs to be simplified.

- the achievements presented in the article should be compared more closely with examples from other countries. The article is too review-and-case only.

- there should be more references to existing scientific achievements in the article, because the literature review omits the basic achievements in recent years (examples of achievements were published, among others, in the journal Applied Sciences, Sustainability).
