Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

The article was reviewed

The subject matter of the article is interesting.

In this paper, the research progress on sound field control is in recent years was re-viewed.

The following should be considered in the article.

1. Use more research into the history of research

2. Correct the grammar of the article and the text of the article

3. Make the research literature more complete and detailed

4. The results of the research should be completed and presented at the end of the article

5. The specifications of the test equipment should be further provided in such research.

Good luck

Reviewer 2 Report

The authors propose for the special issue on sound field control a manuscript entitled “A Review of Sound Field Control”.

The manuscript appears well written and updated with recent references, many of which represent the work of the authors in this field. It is thus remarkable for the reader to receive an overview on the topic with richness of detail, and at the same time good clarity in exposition. This paper could be a valuable contribution to the community.

The conclusions are somewhat generic, considering the vast amount of technical detail presented in the review. For example, when mentioning the problem of strong reverberation, I could not find a manifest connection with the situations presented earlier. The problem of strong reverberation was in fact shadowed by the description of the steps of the algorithmic procedures. It would have been beneficial to state explicitly when the room acoustics rather than noise sources may impair the efficacy of the control algorithms.

At a structural level, considering that this is a review paper, I have found that more attention is dedicated to what the authors address as “personal audio system” and active noise control “ANC”. I would suggest the authors to specify why they treat the topic of sound field reproduction with less insights than the other two topics. This imbalance could also be made visible in the title. In fact, the authors could specify in the title that they review with more detail personal audio system and ANC.

At a cosmetic level, I would prefer to read “personal audio systems” rather than “personal audio system” when describing these systems in general. I have also found strange that active noise control is presented with an acronym (ANC) and personal audio system is not presented with an acronym.

In section 2 “ Sound Field Reproduction”, the subsection 2.2 holds the same title “ Sound Field Reproduction” . It would be better for the authors to be more specific in the reproduction techniques they are presenting since this is a very vast topic. It looks like the authors hereby present only the basics of the topic and not recent advanced techniques. This is a limitation for this paper, thus I would like the author to clarify more explicitly the qualities of their contribution.

Going through the paragraphs I have found some minor amendments to do:

Page 3 L.102 “points . was firstly” >  should be “ points was firstly”
Page 4 L. 170, when presenting the planarity control method. I find strange that the authors have not provided reference for this method. Please add at least a reference.
Page 4 L.177-178 > “many researchers have proposed improvements based on ACC methods” > please be more specific since this is too vague for a scientific article. For example mention some of the improvements with corresponding references.
Page 4. L.180  > “focus” should be “focuses”
Page 5. Figure 2 > “Optimaization” should be “Optimization”
Page 6. Figures 3 and 4 and in the text. There is no description on how the graphs were extracted. What is it that is shown in the pictures? Please give detail on the signal processing chain used to generate these figures and the original input. In case they derive from experimental data (rather than theoretical), it should be also specified how they were obtained.
Page 10. Figure 7. The Figures are extracted from other papers. Please verify with the publisher and the authors that this is allowed.

Kind regards,

The reviewer

Reviewer 3 Report

Although I can see that big effort was invested in this paper, I do not recommend publishing it. It's scope is to large, and each of components is not fluently and clearly presented.

Author Response

Dear Reviewer,

Thank you very much for your careful reading and comments for our manuscript. In this review, we divide the sound field control into three research directions to introduce separately. And we mainly give typical algorithms for each research direction, along with improvements for important performance.

Best regards

Reviewer 4 Report

The authors carry out a review of sound field control.   While the review has good material, it is not quite comprehensive.

There is a whole area of active noise control, in which active materials such as piezoelectric materials are used to control structural acoustics and through which enclosed sound fields are controlled.  With that said, following is a partial list of references that the authors can include to mention this area in their review:

a)  Active control of sound and vibration, IEEE Control Systems Magazine, Vol. 15, 1995.

b) Experiments on active control of structurally radiated sound using multiple piezoceramic actuators, The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, Vol. 91, 1992.

c) Active Control of Interior Noise in a Three-Dimensional Enclosure, Smart Materials and Structures, Vol. 5, 1996.

d) Studies on Performance Functions for Interior Noise Control, Smart Materials and Structures, Vol. 6, 1997.

In the abovementioned, both radiation into the far field as well as control inside enclosures (both local and global) are considered.

The review can also include two separate sections at the end, one related to limited to limitations of current control methodologies and another related to future directions.
