Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

The review by Andritsos et al. on the prevalence and distribution of Campylobacter in poultry farming integrates a large amount of information published in recent years and can be very useful for researchers in this field.

The structure and writing of the manuscript make it easy to read and understand, which is appreciated. The references included are relevant to the sector and the comparison between the different studies is easy to interpret.

I would however like to suggest some ideas to the authors:

L63-65. In my opinion, it is not necessary to indicate the source of infection in parentheses, since it is the definition of a reservoir.

L67-68. Some species are in the plural, like chickens, and others are in the singular, like turkey. Please, put all in singular or plural.

L77-80. Unless it is a requirement of the journal, it is not necessary to indicate the page number of the reference in which the information is found.

Figure 2. The illustration of the back would be more visual at the bottom of the image, with the arrow pointing to the back instead of the chest. I do not know if you understand...

L167. It is not clear to me whether when the authors indicate "the succession of Campylobacter species or strains, with a special emphasis on C. jejuni and C. coli, during refrigerated storage of artificially contaminated chicken meat packaged samples could be the subject of future research" they mean a succession or a success.

Section 2.3. It would be interesting to include a couple of lines in relation to the possible transmission of Campylobacter between broilers and wild birds, since it has been shown that it can act as a reservoir of the bacterium.

L322. mPCR is misspelled...

My recommendation is to post after minor corrections are made. Congratulations on the manuscript.

English is very good, except for certain sentences that contain unusual expressions, but I think they are not grammatically incorrect.

Reviewer 2 Report

Dear authors

I hope all of you are always fine. Regarding the revision of the manuscript No. applsci-2492601, titled “Prevalence and Distribution of Thermotolerant Campylobacter Species in Poultry: A Comprehensive Review with a Focus on the Factors Affecting the Detection and Enumeration of Campylobacter jejuni and Campylobacter coli in Chicken Meat”. Really it is an interesting review, however, some comments should be replied.

Comments

1-    The title included the Thermotolerant Campylobacter Species; however, more details should be mentioned about this type in the whole review????

2-    In lines 176-178: the authors discussed the high prevalence of Campylobacter in hot summer months; however, lines 204-207 discussed opposite results of higher incidence during winter season. Please discuss why??

3-    More research should be discussed about the advantages and limitations of PCR-Based Methods and Techniques.

4-    New technologies of identification of Campylobacter Species such as MALDI-TOF Mass Spectrometry, etc….. should be briefly discussed.

5-    More details should be mentioned about the isolation of antimicrobial resistant Campylobacter Species???
