Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

Geometric and mechanical parameters that characterize curved and relatively soft structures integrated with piezoelectric actuators are studied. My comments for this paper are as follows:

1. A photograph including the experimental set-up and the prototypes should be added in the paper.

2. In Figure 12, there are large differences between the numerical predictions and the experimental results. Please explain.

3. Some figures should be presented with higher resolution (e.g., Figures 13-27).

4. Please provide the numerical predictions or experimental results when the proposed design is applied to de-Icing systems.

Reviewer 2 Report

1. The chapter 'Modelling of strain actuation on curved beams' should be improved:
a)  numerical research methodology should be described in more detail,
b) The authors must explain how the coefficient (formula 11) is used in numerical research,
c) the meaning of all symbols should be explained, e.g., there is no explanation of tPZT,
d) the Young's modulus of piezoceramics should be given.

2. The chapter ' Results and validation' should be improved:
a) laboratory research methodology should be described in more detail: resolution of sensors, accuracy of measurement,
b) The authors must add graphs that show the effect of the applied voltage to the piezoelectric on the properties of the entire structure.

Minor editing of English language required.
