Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

The article publishes results about the electronic holographic displays and suggested new amplitude modulating encoding scheme for extended reality. Тhe article includes geometric analyzes filled with analytical dependencies with corresponding transformations, analyzes through specialized to 3D visual effects software, and data from real experiment. Several types of geometric transformations were compared, and a specific model was chosen as they were used. The publication heralds applied contributions and future realization and implementation of the new technology. The authors reach up to 25 literary sources related to this subject. Although the article is, in my opinion, a complete study with sufficient data and evidence, I think that the authors should pay attention to some things, especially regarding the layout:

- to pay attention to the fonts on the figures, they differ a lot with the main text and this lowers the aesthetic vision, in my opinion, the font can be different from the main text, but it should be the same for all figures;

- the equation on line 181 starts with "a", is that a constant or is the variable "alpha" on line 182;

- the first equation (1) is on line 181 and 182, the equation in line 215 starts again with (1);

- I ask the authors to answer whether the unit of measurement of the coordinates is really in figure 7 and 8 is [nm];

- [25, 26] literary sources are cited on line 343 but 25 items are indicated in the reference;

- in figure 11 the color scale is up to intensity 200 in a) and the others are up to 150. Does this mean that intensity 100, for example, looks different (with a different color) in the first and the remaining pictures. If so, it should be corrected.

The paper describes how an amplitude-modulating SLM can be used for holographic 3D display which requires a complex-valued optical field. Three known ways are described and compared with a new proposed technique. All four methods are tested experimentally: visually and through quantitative statistical analyses. The advantage of the new proposed method is clearly demonstrated. Overall, the research is a well-balanced combination of an experiment and simulation, all the required details are included. A number of minor corrections would be good before publishing:

The possessive form like complex-field’s, observer’s, VW’s, eye’s, CGH’s, user’s is not really good for formal scientific writing.

113 viewing distance of the observer of 500 mm hardly can be called near-eye.

194 experimentally derived the optimized conditions… could you please explain the criteria for this optimisation.

248 parametric factor ε… Could you please say what is the value of ε and why? And could you please explain MAO a bit more: not only how it is done, but also why doing this scaling could be advantageous.

251 see Eq. (5)… from the text it looks like you mean Eq. (4)

251 we establish the a of four different kinds… something strange in this sentence.

Figure 5a. Could you please explain why it is a uniform green field with no image.

305 the focal length of the optical lens attached to the camera to take the pictures is about 1.45 m. Probably you mean the focusing distance settings of the lens, because earlier you said that lens Canon EF 70-200mm is used.

308 background light and speckle patterns prominently appear… and 311 non-diffracted background light is efficiently suppressed… on Figure 9. Visually I don’t see much difference between all four pictures.  The quantitative statistical analyses you applied later is more convincing way to prove the difference rather than emphasise it on visual level.

312 We noticed that the diffraction efficiency of Burckhardt’s hologram or Lee’s hologram is much lower… Is any chance to quantify (or measure) the diffraction efficiency here?

Figure 12. What is the meaning of the horizontal size of the boxes?

410 IQR is not defined yet.
