Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

The paper present a genetic algorithm (GA) using a chromosome attachment. For the authors, this is a new genetic operation that offers variability in terms of the number of chromosomes. The proposed algorithm presented in the paper is applied to anti-submarine high value unit (HVU) escort mission simulation in order to confirm its effectiveness.

This paper is well written, however some a global review should be taken in order to correct some sentences, which has minor errors.

Introduction should be more detailed especially how thus work the GA with fixed chromosomes and these limitations.

The last paragraph of section Introduction should be review.

In the section background the author should introduce a subsection anti-submarine high value unit (HVU) escort mission simulation in order to explain the advantages of this simulation.

In the second line of section 3, Proposed Variable Chromosome, where the author has “ fixed-chromosome Gas”, should be “fixed-chromosome GAs”.

Figure 4 should be more detailed.

In section 6, Conclusions, future work should be more detailed.

References should be update with more recent research.

Author Response

Introduction should be more detailed especially how thus work the GA with fixed chromosomes and these limitations. ; (Answer) Based on your suggestion, additional sentences are added in line 38. :  Since the number of rules included in agents does not need to be vary, fixed chromosome GA is quite useful in stable situations.   The last paragraph of section Introduction should be review. ;(Answer) As you mentioned, last paragraph of section 1 is reviewed and modified. :  This paper is organized as follows: In Section 2, backgrounds of the research are present. The descriptions for the proposed variable chromosome GA are discussed in Section 3. The GA-based simulation methodology using the variable chromosome is demonstrated in Section 4. Also, a case study is conducted to verify the simulations in Section 5. In Section 6, conclusions and future research are discussed.   In the section background the author should introduce a subsection anti-submarine high value unit (HVU) escort mission simulation in order to explain the advantages of this simulation. ;(Answer) Anti-submarine high value unit (HVU) escort mission is explained on the first paragraph in section 4. And reference of this mission is added. ;

In the second line of section 3, Proposed Variable Chromosome, where the author has “ fixed-chromosome Gas”, should be “fixed-chromosome GAs”. ;(Answer) As you mentioned, it is modified. :        Figure 4 should be more detailed. ;(Answer) As you mentioned, Figure 4 is updated. :     In section 6, Conclusions, future work should be more detailed. ;

(Answer) In order to make clear future work, some sentences are updated in line 274.

In the future, further works for the potential variable-chromosome GA such as applications of structure learning in the artificial neural network will be conducted. Meanwhile its applications for the Neural Architecture Search (NAS) and Automated Machine Learning (AutoML) are going to be investigated.

References should be update with more recent research. ;

(Answer) As you mentioned, some references are updated with recent researches. :

Reviewer 2 Report

The manuscript addresses the design of warship simulations through a specific type of GA. This sounds interesting but though interesting, the field of application could be more relevant. The English style is not very accurate and some errors have been detected in the text. For instance:

1) Capital letter after comma.

2) Gas instead of GAs.

3)Algorithm capitalized A instead the complete name or lower.

4) No space before parenthesis. Why not?

5) in 3.2 instead Section 3.2 (improve legibility).

Thus, the manuscript could be published with a detailed revision over the style taking care of mistakes committed. I strongly recommend to the authors to work slowly and methodically in the manuscript. I desire the best of lucks to them.
