Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

I think the paper is well structured. please check following suggestions.

1) Red words in Fig 1 and Fig 2 shoud be more visible and please elucidate where the words indicate to.

2) Please add a schematic diagram for Fig 1 and Fig 2.

3) It seems the numbers of references were missed for [18],[19] and [20]

Author Response

First of all, Thanks for your hard working of reviewing on our present work carefully. All the comments are very helpful to improve our manuscript. Authors have modified the paper according to these comments.

For suggestion 1): Clarity of the words in Fig 1 and Fig 2 have been improved in the revised paper. Red lines have been added to elucidate where the words indicate to.

For suggestion 2): “Schematic diagram” has been added for Fig 1 and Fig 2 in the revised paper.

For suggestion 3): The three references are not quoted in the paper, so that they have been deleted in the revised paper. Several references related to the study have been added in the revised paper.

The paper topic is interesting and paper can be published but only after the above suggestions:

Abstract: The abstract is expected to include a brief digest of the research, that is, new methods, results, concepts, and conclusions only. The abstract needs to be more focused and achievements needs mentioned clearly. At the moment abstract is more like an introduction than abstract. Please add some information from the conclusion (quantifications).

Introduction based on references only from one side of world. I personally feel that this part of paper is not concise enough from a reader’s perspective. Introduction must provide a comprehensive critical review of recent developments in a specific area or theme that is within the scope of the journal (advanced manufacturing), not only a list of published studies or a bibliometric one. Introduction is expected to have an extensive literature review followed by an in-depth and critical analysis of the state of the art. References section should be extensive about information connecting with AWJ and new methods connected with this process (PWJ). I suggest add information to better describe what other researchers have done in this area. Please look on papers published by prof Sergej Hloch or prof Foldyna. I suggest compare your work with new articles from this field:

Determination of vibration frequency depending on abrasive mass flow rate during abrasive water jet cutting. By: Hreha, Pavol; Radvanska, Agata; Hloch, Sergej; et al. INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF ADVANCED MANUFACTURING TECHNOLOGY  Volume: 77   Issue: 1-4   Pages: 763-774   Published: MAR 2015

ROUGHNESS PARAMETERS CALCULATION BY MEANS OF ON-LINE VIBRATION MONITORING EMERGING FROM AWJ INTERACTION WITH MATERIAL. By: Hreha, Pavol; Radvanska, Agata; Knapcikova, Lucia; et al. METROLOGY AND MEASUREMENT SYSTEMS  Volume: 22   Issue: 2   Pages: 315-326   Published: JUN 2015

The strengths and limitations of the applied approach should be clearly identified for the readers of the paper.

Fig. 3 do not contribute anything important to the paper and should be removed.

All variables parameters should be written in italic style.

The discussion is shallow and needs more details, the observations and future trends. This chapter should be connected with others published papers.

Conclusions are totally simplistic;  Please try to emphasize your novelty, put some quantifications, and comment on the limitations. This is a very common way to write conclusions for a learned academic journal. The conclusions should highlight the novelty and advance in understanding presented in the work.

Author Response

First of all, Thanks for your hard working of reviewing on our present work carefully. All the comments are very helpful to improve our manuscript. Authors have modified the paper according to these comments.

For abstract: Abstract has been modified in the revised paper. Words for introducing the ASJ have been deleted. New method for measuring the dynamic rock strain has been emphasized. Quantified results and conclusions have been added into the abstract.

For introduction: In the revised paper, content of material manufacturing with water jet has been added into the introduction, which can better describe what other researchers have done in water jet technology.

For the strengths and limitations of the approach: The strengths and limitations of the approach have been added into section 2.1 in the revised paper. “The approach has two advantages. The one is that no touch between the measuring element and measured object can simplify the strain measuring process. The other is that strain data of whole measured surface can be obtained instead of data of a point. However, the approach also has shortcoming that its accuracy will be decrease when it is used to measure strain less than 10μm.”

For discussion: Detailed discussion was carried out in the revised paper. The revised paper corrected the reason of the difference between the theoretical and experimental results, added the quantized value of the dynamic strain maximum value, presented the advantages and limitation of the new approach for testing the rock dynamic strain.

For conclusions: Conclusions have been modified in the revised paper. The revised conclusions emphasize the novelty of the experimental approach that is the non-contact strain measurement system. It also summarize the advantages and limitations of the new approach. Moreover, quantized conclusion was added into the revised paper according to the content added in the discussion.

For formats: Fig. 3 has been removed in the revised paper. All variables parameters have changed into italic style.
