Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

Review report: Relationship between stress state and microstructure of 7B04 aluminum alloy surface fatigue properties improved by laser shock peening

1.       Abstract section is written well.

2.       The application and novelty of the work should be discussed in a separate section.

3.       Introduction section needs depth analysis and clear discussion and add key published work and try to make a bridge between current and previous published work.

4.       Add recently published work on similar topic.

5.       Discuss about the experimental section, sample preparation, and standard used and sample image after machining.

6.       The image quality is very poor and difficult to reach any conclusions.

7.       Add good quality SEM image with EDS spectra.

8.       Discussion related to residual stresses need major attention in the introduction section. Discuss about methods used in detail in the experimental section. Refer to the following: https://doi.org/10.1016/j.matlet.2020.128347; 10.1520/JTE20180247.

9.       How many samples were tested for each condition?

10.    It is difficult to get any information from fig. 8.

11.    The fracture surface study need depth discussion in terms of cleavage, dimples, tear ridges, and precipitates. Also add EDS spectra of the fracture surface: https://doi.org/10.1016/j.engfailanal.2017.06.044.

12.    In XRD plot add the relative weight percentage of the phases, if possible.
