Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

The manuscript reported a new method of super-hydrophobic coating for high-voltage insulation. The performance of the developed method was well discussed, but language editing (especially the use of space) and changes in figures are required before publication. There are too many points to mention for language errors, so I'll only comment on the non-language-related ones.

Lines 147-148 & caption of Fig 3: There was no explanation of 3(g)-(j). Therefore, I wasn't sure if the explanation was correct.

Line 224: There was no mention of Fig 8 in the main text. Delete Fig 8 or add an explanation in the main text.

Figure 7a: The picture was not taken from the side but obliquely from above because we can see the droplet even at the lower black part. Therefore, the contact angle must be larger for the insulator, and the explanation "the surface has been changed from hemispheres" was wrong.

Reviewer 2 Report

The manuscript "Preparation and super-hydrophobic mechanism analysis of FAS-17 modified SiO2/PDMS coatings for high-voltage composite insulators" by Shen and coworkers describes a complete method for the preparation of a hydrophobic coating however the presentation and discussion as well as the novelty of this work compared with other hydrophobic coating need to be discussed clearly to be published in Coating.

-         More evidences for the novelty of the work to be discussed in the introduction.

-         More references with discussion of previous works need to include with more focus on the recent works in the field (2020-2023)

-         The manuscript need to be edited thoroughly, many wrong spacing (e.g. line 92 and 157 and other places), consistency in abbreviations (for example: PSA-17 or Psa-17) and nomenclature for polymers and chemicals , many grammatically mistakes especially for singular and plural, …

-         Ammonia solution specification in the materials section

-         Is there any SEM images or DLS characterizations for the prepared SiO2 nanoparticles?

-         Line 153: "...a great many holes are found in the micro-nano structure...." It is not clear what the indication on the presence of the holes is, please clarify this points with evidence and citations.

-         FT-IR spectra for the FAS-17 modified SiO2 NPs need to be regenerated with more clear peaks with magnified transmittance.

-         Contact angle results need to be compared with other standard hydrophobic surfaces from literature.

Round 2

Reviewer 2 Report

The manuscript has been improved and addressed the comments. However, the outcome of the work need to be clearly discussed. The contact angle is below the silicon modified polymers even it is higher than the SiO2 nanoparticles. This outcome is fine and it has no problem just my suggestion is to be discussed and highlighted and the focus to be on the differences from other previously reported modified products such as method, material, … used.

please use reference number instead of DOI link in the table

The decision: The manuscript can be accepted and published in Coatings
