Comments and Suggestions for Authors

The article submitted for review contains interesting research results on surface topography changes. I suggest publishing the manuscript after reading the following comments:

1) It should be explained in detail how the change of the surface layer structure by spherical milling affects the tribological properties of the tested tribological node.

2) In the manuscript, the authors use the gray system theory model, but there is no introduction regarding the description of this system.

3) Fig. 5: Please write the axis captions in English

4) The content regarding the physical experiment should be arranged appropriately to improve the readability of the article. First, the research methodology should be described (research object, working conditions, research methodology, tools and measuring devices) and then the research results should be discussed.

5) Please provide information on the number of samples subjected to wear tests

6) The results of the wear tests should be presented in detail. There is no macrographic and micrographic description of wear.

7) The conclusions are too general and should be specified. There are no conclusions regarding the physical wear tests.

Comments and Suggestions for Authors

The study in this work provides a new idea to further reveal the relationship between surface topographical features and wear resistance. In this paper, the topic is novel, the data is reasonable, the analysis is appropriate, it is suggested to accept after minor revision modifications, the specific details are as follows.

1.     Figure 7b, 8 and 10b should be lager in order to clearly see the description.

2.     Should be added SEM images of cross section of surface topography after ball milling process. For both groups  - M and N, next to Fig. 9.

3.     Add image of wear track.

Title: Study of the Impact of Surface Topography on Wear Resistance

Manuscript ID:coatings-3166824

This paper takes the ball-end milling surface as the research object, establishes the three-dimensional simulation model of the surface topography, analyses the surface topography and the surface texture parameter change rule. Reading carefully the manuscript and viewing the Figure 1 found that this study is practical basic and contains a lot of aspects related to surface topography and ball-end milling machining. The article has potential, but in its current form it requires major corrections. Some of the suggestions for improvement are the following:

1.Authors should be start abstract with briefly the purpose and novelty of the research, the principal results and major conclusions with industrial scope.

2. “In the study of surface texture parameters and friction and wear performance, the

correlation analysis between the parameters helps in the selection of the parameters”

mentioned in line 42. And it will be more understandable if detailed information is

given on how and on what basis the selection is made.

3. How can it be said that 3D surface texture parameters accurately and reliably reflect

surface topographic features?

4. What are the standards used in the tests?

5. Were the experiments repeated?

6. What factors were taken into account when selecting parameters such as Sq, Sa, Sdq,

Sdr, Sp and Sv should be given in the article.

7. Please provide more detailed basis and reference for selecting cutting parameters. Please specify

8. The Chinese expression in the horizontal column of the graphs in figure 5 is not

understandable. please provide it in English if possible.

9. If the resolution of the shapes can be improved, the shapes will look clearer.

10. It would be good if all sections of your article were corrected in English language.

11. The transitions between different sections of the manuscript could be made more fluid. Specifically, the shift from correlation analysis to predictive models should be clarified to enhance understanding.

12. The rationale for selecting specific parameters (e.g., normal load, sliding speed) needs further elaboration. Additionally, the limitations of the simulation, such as the exclusion of temperature effects, should be discussed in more detail.

13. While the improved correlation analysis is innovative, the mathematical steps involved should be explained more clearly. An example or diagram could facilitate comprehension of the process.

14. The discussion of results could better connect the findings to the theoretical framework and more extensively explore their practical implications in engineering and manufacturing.

15. In the Results and Discussion section, the content will be enriched if the studies related to the subject of the article are cited comparatively. Thus the value and citation rate of the article will increase.

16. Explain why this material (ardened mould 394 steel Cr12MoV,) was chosen

17. Details about the cutting tool used in the experiments must be given. It is the cutting tool that forms the surface on the workpiece. Therefore, all details and figures of the cutting tool must be given.

18. I understand from Figure 9 that a surface of 2 mm*2 mm was measured (CCI Map Taylor Hobson non-contact white light interferometer). Measure a larger surface can give more accurate results. If there is a wider (5 mm*5 mm) measure possibility, it is recommended to measure.

19. While the references are appropriate, incorporating a broader range of sources, particularly recent studies, would provide a more comprehensive context for the study's findings. More references should be included certainly the reference. Some key references were studied in several paper as follows:

https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.10014151

20. Some figures require more detailed captions and ensuring that all figures and tables are referenced in the text would improve coherence.

21.  The conclusion synthesizes the key findings effectively but should offer a more detailed discussion on future research directions and the study's practical applications.
