Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

Manuscript ID: atoms-526243
Title: Laser-plasma and self-absorption measurements with applications to  analysis of atomic and molecular stellar astrophysics spectra
Authors: Christian Parigger *, Christopher Helstern, Ghaneshwar Gautam
Sp.issue: Atomic Processes in Plasmas: APiP-2019

This is a kind of continuation of authors investigation published recently in Atoms (Ref [6]).  Authors presents characterization and application of laboratory laser spectroscopy experiments for simulation of astrophysical conditions, in particular, those of white dwarfs.

The results are important and needed for plasma diagnostics of laboratory and astrophysical plasmas. The paper is well written and organized that I can recommend the paper for publication in Atoms journal, but before publication I ask authors to correct following:

I would suggest that the authors slightly modify the headings of the Sections/subsections because they are very similar as in the previous paper Ref [6]. (Materials and Methods, Astrophysical white dwarf spectra …)

In the introduction (page 2), the authors should emphasize what’s new here and give the aim of this work, as e.g. 'The aim of this work is to describe in more details....' or similar, i.e. what is the reason to write this paper? What about the other or similar research?

It may not be necessary to display Fig 1. I think it is enough to refer to authors previous works e.g. Ref [6].

Some references are randomly listed. After Ref [13] is [15] and after [19] is [22]..?  In general, it could be useful to check all references.

It would be good if the text and tags in Fig 8 be enlarged. In caption of Fig 9 is too much brackets. The captions of Figs. 15 and 16 are poorly written.

Typos:

Page 1, line 25:  archieves =>archives

Page 3, line 101:  continnuum =>  continuum

Page 8, line 164:   intitiation = >  initiation

Page9, line 175:   insignifcant => insignificant

Ref 28  “…plsam….”  => “…plasma….”

Respectfully,

Dear Reviewer,

Your comments are appreciated! In response to your suggestions, edits are highlighted in green, suggestion from other referee are highlighted in blue, overlaps in cyan.

(1) Section titles are changed, see lines 66, 88, and 223;

(2) Introduction includes now a short summary of what is new, lines 31-43;

(3) We would like to keep Figure 1, for completeness;

(4) References are re-ordered to reflect continuous numbering;

(5) Fig. 8 is split into two figures and enlarged, see line 179 and pages 9 and 10, including edits in captions. The caption for Figures 16 and 17 (formerly Figs. 15 and 16) are edited, and Fig.10 (formerly Fig.9) caption is corrected.

(6) Typos are corrected: line 25, line 114 (formerly 101), line 180 (formerly 164),  line 190 (formerly 175), and line 350, Ref. 30 (formerly Ref. 28)

line 37: \eta is dimensionless, thus move 'amg' to be part of definition for 'no', like 'no=1amg=268.68x10^17 cm^-3'.

line 39: remove 'amg' from '\eta=0.004-0.02 amg'

 line 87: add '(FWHM) in front of 'are extracted' and remove '(FWHM)' from line 101

line 143: Please comment the effect of Boltzmann factor exp(-Eu/kT) at relevant temperatures for spectral line wings. see https://link.springer.com/article/10.1140/epjd/e2007-00284-4

line 168: Figure 9 caption, remove double parentheses, '))' and '(('

line 175: missing 'i' in 'insignifcant'

line 192: Please comment sensitivity of obtained results if local distribution is obtained without Abel inversion, like for example in 'Determination of the local plasma parameters without the use of Abel inversion', DOI: 10.13140/2.1.1847.3923, Summer School and International Symposium on the Physics of Ionized Gases, Volume: 21, pp. 318-321 (2002)

lines 206-207: please complete the last sentence

line 240: 'cpatured' should be 'captured'
