Cover Story: The number of autistic students entering higher education is increasing globally, but most research on understanding their experiences and support needs still comes from the U.S., U.K. and Australia. This online survey study with open-ended questions explored (i) autistic students' experiences in higher education in Singapore; and (ii) non-autistic students’ experiences of studying and socially engaging with their autistic peers. Findings included themes commonly found in other countries and also themes relating to Singapore’s sociocultural context (e.g., pressure to “blend in” to conform to social norms) and highlight the influence that the community can have on autistic students' experiences. Improving inclusiveness both within higher education and in our societies is a necessarily joint effort among autistic and non-autistic stakeholders. View this paper
