Comments and Suggestions for Authors

The article explains the potentially valuable components of the Huangshui. However, since the tittle indicates that "advances in resource utilization" will be described, the methods to recover those valuable compounds should be developed.

The abstract is not informative. What are the alternatives for the utilization of the

Huangshui

It is recommended to remove the “fourteenth five-year plan period” on line 40. It is confusing for readers that are not Chinese and are not aware of the meaning.

On lines 51-52 it is written that Huangshui has chemical oxygen demand (CODcr) of 100,000–300,000 mg/L, five-day biochemical 5oxygen demand (BOD5) of 50,000–180,000 mg/L

On lines 101 Huangshui is constituted of complex ingredients and includes a large quantity of organic substance 102 and microbes with 25,000–40,000 mg/L CODCr and 25,000–30,000 mg/L BOD5. Since different ranges of values are mentioned for the same parameters the data is not clear. Furthermore, the same information should not be mentioned twice in the document.

Line 107, revise the sentence “the acidities of Huangshui samples fluctuated in agreement with pH fluctuation”. “Acidity” is not a physicochemical variable. The variable is pH and if it is below 7 it behaves as an acid. Same for table 1, instead of acidity could be used “organic acids content.”

Line 120 “which were important compositions of “.  Revise the English use. “Composition” is not the appropriate term.

Lie 145 Revise English use “Appropriate evaluate and utilization of Huangshui”

Line 148 Revise English use “new methods to obtain its high value and sustainable development of the industry.”

Figure 2 is difficult to follow since it has different orientations for the text and it is not showing new information. It is recommended to delete it.

Line 160 “The total number of microbes in Huangshui remains at 105–106cell/mL”. Revise the exponents in the cell concentration.

Lactobacillus is a genus; therefore, it must be written in italics. The same applies when other genera are mentioned.

Section 2.2.2. Revise the English use “flavor matters” is not appropriate. It means that flavor is important, it is not a noun.

Line 322 Revise the English language use “making Huangshui has heavy odor”

Line 326 “modern microbes” should not be used. What is a modern microbe?

Line 380. The sentence is not clear due to the English language use “Although biotechnological and chemical techniques require more chemicals and energy, the methods obtain for more complete extraction of useful components “

Comments on the Quality of English Language

The English language use should be improved along the text.

Comments and Suggestions for Authors

The review focuses on the possibilities of using Huangshui, organic wastewater in Chinese Baijiu production. The authors very precisely described the properties of Huangshui and the possibilities of using the ingredients it contains. However, it seems to me that before publishing an article in Fermentation, the authors should address some of my comments below.

1. Please indicate more clearly what the purpose of the article was.

2. Lines 51-53 and Lines 101-103 – The values for CODCr and BOD5 are different.

3. Figure 3 – please provide the source of the information presented in the charts. Please also provide the unit.

4. Lines 216-218 – “Many studies” - please give some examples.

5. Figure 4 - please provide the source of the information presented in the chart.

6. Lines 311-317 – this part requires reference to the literature.

7. Line 318 – "a large amount of study" - please provide some examples.

8. Lines 338-347 - this part requires reference to the literature.

9. Subsection 4.2 is too general. The ending sentence of the Introduction suggests that the authors will propose a specific solution allowing for a full utilization strategy.

10. Please align the entire text of the article to both margins.

Comments and Suggestions for Authors

The authors addressed the suggestions. On line 286 the abbreviation for polymerase chain reaction and denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis must be changed from DGEE to DGGE.

Author Response

We are grateful to the reviewer for the careful and critical analysis of the manuscript. The precious comments can help us significantly improve the manuscript quality. The manuscript has been carefully checked and revised according to the comments. The major changes in the revised manuscript are highlighted in red.

1. The authors addressed the suggestions. On line 286 the abbreviation for polymerase chain reaction and denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis must be changed from DGEE to DGGE.

Response: Thanks for your advice and we are sorry for our careless. The DGEE has been corrected into DGGE whose full spelling is given. Please see Page 8, Line 287.

We would like to express our gratitude again for your valuable comments and suggestions and hope that the correction will meet with your approvals.
