Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

The paper presents good research on obtaining fumaric acid from oil palm empty fruit bunches. The procedure involving steam explosion treatment, hydrolysis and fermentation leads to high yield of the product.

Experiments are well planned and carefully performed.

The paper is good quality and deserves publication.

Reviewer 2 Report

The paper studies the recovery and purification of fumaric acid from fermented oil palm empty fruit bunches using a simple two-stage precipitation procedure. The paper is generally well structured, but some issues should be addressed, as mentioned below.

Some data presented in the figure 1 can be detailed and discussed in text, as the influence of initial glucose concentration.

The authors mention that “The results of the present study show that up-scaling of FA production induce its higher concentration, improving fermentation productivity as well as ethanol yield” but there are no data regarding either the ethanol production or other by-products obtained by Rh. oryzae K20. The authors should clarify this aspect.

Regarding the efficiency of proposed recovery and purification method, the authors should present comparative data from literature.
