Cover Story: Additive Manufacturing (AM) is a topic of increasing importance within the manufacturing industry. As is often the case with relatively new processes, stakeholders often promise remarkable results with no drawbacks. However, the reality is usually more complex, and determining whether the adoption of AM can lead to real benefits, particularly in the preliminary design phase, is not straightforward yet. In this context, Multiple-Criteria Decision-Making (MCDM) methods can be invaluable in comparing the suitability of different manufacturing processes, as demonstrated in the current investigation. A hybrid MCDM method for comparing AM and conventional processes was validated on a case study relevant to the aerospace industry, emphasising the importance of production batches, material selection, and process design guidelines.
