Cover Story: Chagas disease (CD) has several routes of transmission, but the oral ingestion of Trypanosoma cruzi is growing in recognition throughout Colombia and other endemic regions of Latin America. Oral CD poses a public health threat in certain communities where contaminated food and/or drink products with T. cruzi are continuously shown as infection sources. Other novel sources are being identified in Colombia, such as the consumption of armadillo blood among certain regions with cultural practices of consuming the blood for traditional medicine. Oral CD often leads to significant morbidity and can even lead to death from an overwhelming T. cruzi infection. Our review provides a detailed description of known and suspected routes of oral CD in Colombia, bringing awareness to this neglected form of the disease. View this paper
