Dear Colleagues,

In recent years, the growing threat of antibiotic resistance has intensified the urgent need for effective therapeutic strategies to combat infections. Traditional methods of drug discovery are time-consuming and costly, often leading to a lengthy development timeline that can hinder timely responses to emerging pathogens. As a result, the repositioning of existing drugs has emerged as a promising avenue, offering the possibility of rapid and efficient solutions by leveraging compounds already approved for other uses. The concept of drug repositioning is grounded in the idea that previously developed medications may exhibit multiple mechanisms of action, some of which can be effective against infections. Recent studies have illustrated the potential of this strategy. For example, the application of existing anti-inflammatory medications, such as corticosteroids, has shown promise in managing severe inflammatory responses associated with COVID-19, leading to improved clinical outcomes. Similarly, antimalarial drugs like chloroquine have been investigated for their potential antiviral properties against various pathogens, including those responsible for emerging zoonotic diseases. Nevertheless, the overarching imperative to combat infections in an era of rising resistance underscores the importance of employing all available strategies, including the repositioning of drugs. As the landscape of infectious diseases continues to evolve, embracing drug repositioning could pave the way for novel interventions that save lives and preserve the efficacy of existing therapies.

Antibiotics is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
