Technical Advances in AI-Based Healthcare

Artificial intelligence (AI), as a field that has proven to be significant in healthcare, has started to enable exciting possibilities in medical diagnosis, treatment planning, and patient management. AI is helping healthcare professionals provide more precise, efficient, and personalized patient care, at scales that humans cannot achieve. Machine learning, natural language processing, computer vision, and other breakthroughs in science are allowing for machines to scan complicated medical data, pick up on patterns, and even predict health and disease states with unprecedented degrees of accuracy. Machine learning algorithms can handle huge volumes of medical images to expedite the identification of diseases, such as cancers or heart disease, which would otherwise take years of experience and considerable time to address. Natural language processing (NLP) is another area in which AI has been put to use in converting free written text, such as clinical notes and research papers, into actionable insights that can then be extracted for clinician and researcher use.

The relevance of this field is due to its overall potential of being able to meet the challenges and pressing needs of healthcare by addressing problems related to the growing world population and their health needs arising from increasing chronic diseases and the scarcity of the healthcare workforce. AI-based tools can help alleviate pressure on healthcare systems through remote patient monitoring, predictive analytics to be able to identify disease outbreaks, and automating administrative tasks. AI has great potential in precision medicine, which is the idea of personalized medicine tailored for each individual by taking into account genetic, environment, and lifestyle factors also in the microenvironment of the individual. Such tailored healthcare is essential for treating complex diseases including cancer, diabetes, and neurological disorders. AI has the power to change the face of healthcare like never before, but there are still some hurdles to overcome, i.e., data safety, algorithmic biases, and regulatory standards. Even so, the continued development of research and technical capability in AI for healthcare have opened doors that have yet to be imagined regarding what is possible in the field of healthcare today.

We are pleased to invite you as Guest Editor and Co-Guest Editors for the Special Issue ‘Technical Advances in AI-Based Healthcare’. 

This Special Issue aims to showcase novel research and/or technical advancements of artificial intelligence solutions that transform healthcare access and delivery to achieve the best patient outcomes. It aims to include a sweep of innovations from diagnostic algorithms to predictive analytics that guide preventive strategies to AI-generated personalized treatment avenues. The topic highlights how AI can help to solve some of the trickiest problems in contemporary healthcare, including increasing accuracy in diagnostics, improving patient care, and maximizing clinical workflows through the demonstration of these advancements. It highlights initiatives to address ethical and regulatory challenges with the intention of encouraging responsible and impactful global AI integration into health systems.

Research areas may include (but not limited to) the following:

1. Artificial intelligence in healthcare;
2. Machine learning in medicine;
3. Diagnostic algorithms;
4. Healthcare automation;
5. Ethical AI and privacy.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. Applied Sciences is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
