Special Issue Information

Radiation has emerged as a major modality in the treatment of cancer, evolving from the use of plane film to sophisticated computerized three-dimensional volumetric treatment plans. This progress has been facilitated by significant advancements in medical imaging, which play a pivotal role in ensuring high-quality radiation therapy. Precise localization and accurate radiation dose calculation are essential for effective treatment delivery within the body.

The localization of the tumor for treatment heavily relies on sophisticated medical imaging to obtain precise geometric information and electron density data of tissues for accurate radiation dose calculations. Additionally, image guidance becomes crucial when the patient is positioned on a treatment couch. These aspects form the foundation of medical imaging in radiation therapy.

Radiosurgery, as a specialized radiation therapy technique, utilizes highly focused radiation to administer a concentrated dose to the tumor, with the primary objective of eliminating abnormal tissue while minimizing harm to the surrounding healthy tissue. Key features of advanced radiotherapy and radiosurgery encompass the following:

  1. Precise Targeting: Radiosurgery relies on cutting-edge imaging technologies like CT scans, MRI, or 3D angiography to precisely identify the tumor's location and shape. This information guides the accurate delivery of high-energy radiation beams from various angles, precisely converging at the tumor site with sub-millimeter accuracy.
  2. Sparing Healthy Tissue: The precision of radiation delivery plays a critical role in minimizing damage to adjacent healthy tissue and organs, thereby reducing the risk of side effects.
  3. Various Technologies: Advanced radiotherapy encompasses a range of technologies, such as respiratory control, surface tracking, and proton beam therapy, each offering unique advantages and suitability based on the tumor's type, size, and location.

This Special Issue aims to highlight the advancements in radiotherapy and radiosurgery. Topics of interest may include, but are not limited to, medical imaging applications for cancer treatment, novel concurrent algorithms and applications for radiation therapy dose calculation, medical imaging for treatment target delineation, radiation therapy and radiosurgery treatment plan optimization, image guidance, treatment response evaluation through medical imaging, respiratory motion in medical imaging, and all aspects pertaining to radiation therapy and radiosurgery. Furthermore, the integration of artificial intelligence applications, computer assistance, and quality assurance in radiation therapy and radiosurgery are also subjects of great interest.
