Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

To meet the requirements for social and economic development, there is an increasing demand for tunnels and underground spaces constructed on a large scale for underground infrastructures, geo-resources, geo-environments, waste disposal, as well as energy extraction and storage, etc. In particular, the vigorous development of deeply buried tunnels and underground spaces in recent years presents a significant challenge to the geotechnical practitioners and researchers in managing the complex geological environments and the engineering disasters occurring frequently. Therefore, it is of great significance to conduct both theoretical and technical research from various related aspects, at the forefront of science and engineering for deep tunnels and underground spaces.

This Special Issue concentrates on the latest research on tunnels and underground spaces by using field measurements, experimental testing, analysis methods, numerical modelling and case studies. The objective is to bring together papers on different topics pertinent to failure analysis, stability evaluation, deformation simulation, disaster-causing mechanisms, as well as monitoring and support design. Relevant contributions on deep tunnel and underground engineering are encouraged. Furthermore, the main technological advancements achieved in some domains, such as shield tunnelling, TBM excavation, intelligent construction, and structural optimization, also align with the theme of this Special Issue. Submissions including both original research articles and state-of-the-art review papers are all welcome.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. Applied Sciences is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
