Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

This Special Issue (SI) is devoted to presenting new developments and modeling as well as improvements in existing calculation methods to evaluate the response of grounding systems to low-frequency fault currents and lightning strikes. Analyzing the possibility of using materials other than copper for the construction of grounding electrodes in transformation centers is one of the matters of special interest since, among other consequences, the groundline location can be optimized to achieve the lowest possible ground resistance. In addition, it is necessary to evaluate the ampacity and heating by the Joule effect due to the internal resistance of the conductors. Assessing the effect of the deterioration of grounding electrodes due to oxidation, breakage, or insulation due to a lack of contact with the conductive soil is also addressed. In short, it is about evaluating compliance with the regulations applied to grounding systems, which may be unfulfilled due to the aforementioned changes. This topic is of great practical importance since it affects, on the one hand, the costs of the installation, and, on the other, the safety requirements that grounding systems must meet. New models, improved calculations, new measurement techniques, and other procedures are called to be published through this SI. Any contribution that studies the impact of such changes on the electrical parameters of electrodes is welcome. Likewise, any input on nondestructive, noninvasive, and nonintrusive methods useful in checking the status of grounding electrodes will also be appreciated.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Applied Sciences is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.

The calculation of the grounding resistance of electrodes built with partially oxidized non-perfect conductors is addressed in this paper. A model based on circuit analysis to account for internal resistance is used, while the oxidation or partial coating of the conductor surface is modeled using the concept of the equivalent radius of the coated electrode. From the proposed model, the values of the electrical parameters of the grounding electrodes, such as the grounding resistance and the step and touch potentials, are calculated for real electrodes affected by coating or corrosion and compared with those values under ideal conditions. The results show significant differences in certain configurations that may compromise the safety margins established by current regulations. Full article
