Research on Biological Characteristics of Macromolecular Crystals

Dear Colleagues,

For a long time in human history, drugs have come from accidental discoveries and the screening of natural products, such as the discovery of penicillin and artemisinin. With increasing demands for faster and more effective drug development, structure-based drug design (SBDD) has gained increasing attention. By investigating macromolecular crystals, particularly protein and nucleic acid crystals, researchers are able to uncover the precise three-dimensional arrangements of these macromolecules, which allows for the identification of potential binding sites that are critical for their biological function and the design of molecules that can specifically interact with these sites to modulate their activity.

The aim of this Special Issue is to present an update on the advancements and emerging trends in the biological characteristics of macromolecular crystals, including drug target identification, post-translational modifications, synthetic biology and artificial macromolecules, computational structural biology, protein–protein and protein–nucleic acid interactions, antibody and vaccine development, cryo-electron microscopy (Cryo-EM), and single-particle analysis. We look forward to receiving your valuable contributions which will make this Special Issue a key reference in the field of macromolecular crystals.
