Dear Colleagues,
This edition aims to explore and disseminate advances and applications of the antioxidant activity of natural plant compounds, focusing on the latest innovations, challenges, and applications in human health, food industry, and cosmetics. The antioxidant activity of natural plant compounds is a constantly evolving field of study; however, some challenges still need to be overcome:
Stability: Many antioxidants are unstable and can decompose when exposed to light, heat, or oxygen, reducing their effectiveness over time.
Potential toxicity: Like any substance, high doses can be toxic and cause adverse health effects.
Source and administration route: The choice of source and administration route of antioxidants can influence their effectiveness. Not all antioxidants are absorbed in the same way, and some may be more effective when consumed together with other nutrients.
Bioavailability: Some antioxidants have low bioavailability, which can limit their effectiveness in providing health benefits. In addition, excessive use of antioxidants may interfere with the absorption of other nutrients, leading to nutritional imbalances.
Paradoxical effect: Using antioxidants in high doses can have a paradoxical effect, where instead of protecting cells from oxidative damage, they may promote oxidative stress.
Individualized treatments: Recognizing individual variations in antioxidant effects due to genetics, lifestyle, and health status underscores the need for personalized antioxidant supplementation.
Antioxidants and Aging: Although oxidative stress is implicated in aging, evidence on whether antioxidant supplementation delays aging remains inconclusive in humans. This topic includes both positive and negative effects of natural antioxidants on skin and skin cells, as well as their cosmetic applications.
In this Special Issue, original research papers or review articles focused on all aspects related to advances and applications of the antioxidant activity of natural plant compounds are welcome.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process.
